Bottled water for top offs?

Like the stuff sold at supermarkets that come in jugs? Also, I have one of those brita water filters, is that water safe?

Your britta is considered RO... RO/DI is recommended. RO is better than tap, but still considered a source of problems for aquairums. Mostly adding silicates and nitrates.

yea, I'm pretty sure you can buy distilled water at the supermarket..in the area where all the different kinds of drinking water is..just make sure that it says distilled..it's been through more filtering rendering it somewhat non-drinkable (at least its advised not to drink it, it won't kill you, it just doesn't taste as good as many of the minerals have been removed)

if you can get your hands on RO/DI water that would be ideal. I wouldn't use Brita water

So does the top off water need to be salt water or will the water just be making up for the evaporation and will reuse the salt left behind? The LFS near me sells salt water per gallon, so i could just get that...

BTW, I'm using a JBJ 12G Nano Cube

Aren't britta's just carbon filters? They seem to filter water coming out of the tap a heck of a lot faster then my RO unit pushes out water and that is without DI.

home deeeppppooo has the 5gallon jugs and there 12$ but you can take them back when your done with the water and get 7$$ back i did that for my 55gallon and it is RO/DI water

I don't think the Britta does anything useful for a saltwater tank. If your own RO-DI unit isn't feasible at this point, I'd suggest sticking to distilled and hope for the best. Topoff for water lost to evaporation should be fresh water. Topoff for replacing skimmer output needs to be salt. :)

And so 20-25% water change is salt as well. And what is "replacing skimmer output"?

When you clean your skimmer, the water that goes down the drain is saltwater and thus will lower salinity over time (A long depending on quantity of waste). Water change water needs to be salt water. Finally, top off water from evaporation should be pure water, no salt.

i have purchased Britta filters in the past and if i read the label correctly it said nothing about removing chlorine, i checked the website and it says it reduces not removes chlorine, all i think it does is make the water taste better and remove some impurities. i use spring water from wallie world and i have never had any problem.
