bought a future mate for my gold stripe maroon

I have had a gold stripe Maroon in my dt for about five years now, and have been looking for a smaller one to go with it to possibly pair up with. I don't know if this was the best way to do it, but I think it might just work out. I put it in a specamin container with holes in it to see if my bigger one would go after it. after being in there for a couple hours, my bigger one never paid attention to it so I set it free. The small clown swimmed right down too it and laid on its side shimmying and the older one just kind of nudged it around, but never nipped at it. Is this a submissive bahaviour that the new fish is doing? the only fish that is nipping at his fins is my six line wrasse.

Yes. The shimmying is a way of submitting to the larger female. It is a good sign that the the larger one is not pummeling it. You may have just made a match.

hope so, it sure looks funny the female is about 4 inches long and the new male to be is about a inch and a half long.

ive been trying to pair my up also, but people keep telling me its almost impossible to do. my has been in the tank for more than a year now and is about 2 inches big. i wanted to get a smaller one to pair it with. do u think it was just luck u found a match or what exactly did u do? im planning on getting a small one this week to see if itll pair.

let me now how they are doing.

The specimen container is the best way to pair maroons without endangering the smaller one. Fish can be finicky when choosing a mate.

what i was thinking is to build a small cage for the smaller mate so he can escape to and the female wont be able to get through. maybe eggcrate?

rope23: were did u get that container? how are the mates doing?

I could not have gotten luckier when I looked it my tank this morning I couldn't believe my eyes both fish were in the same bta like they have been lovers their whole lives. That was easy, Lol!! Now I just need too wait for new one to mature and maybe if I'm lucky they will spawn someday.

Just get a breeder container, the kind that float are fine, they are cheap at any LFS
And I wouldn't say it almost impossible to pair them, just can be a challenge, but like OP, many do get lucky first time.

thanks for the info guys. i will try to pair my up and see wat happens. hopefully ill be lucky too. i do hear though that the anenome does make it easier for them to pair up. what does that container look like? and what can i use it for afterwards?

This is the container that I have used (( granted, I used for pairing up a Potter's angel, but would work for clowns )). At the LFS I bought it from I want to say it was called a "betta box" or something like that.

now i see what u guys are talking about. its just a clear box were the two can see each other without any physical contact. i have an extra "betta keeper" from when i used to have those fishes. here is what it looks like: http://www.petlandplus.com/images/407844.jpg

would this work? i can take the divider out of the middle to give the new fish more room to swim in. the only problem i think is that the top of this "keeper" only has two small hole to fit pallets. would that be enough to allow oxygen in to the fish, or do i need to be creative?
