Brand new Tunze 6065 does not start up

Hi Roger, as stated in my title my brand new Tunze 6065 does not start up. When I installed it, and when I had to switch it off for a water change I had a hard time getting it to start. Any ideas?

It probably is running but backwards, this would happen if the drive unit cannot move forward, hit the front cover and fall back to correct direction. My best guesses are, either the drive unit is very tight on the shaft, these are finished by hand to fit the shaft and sometimes the assembler needs to ream a small amount of material from the hole in the magnet so it is not too tight on the shaft, this may have been missed. Any debris caught between this hole and the shaft could cause a problem as well, if for example some sand or detritus stirred up and caught in their. I would rinse it well and if that doesn't do it, see about a replacement drive unit.

I took the unit apart and cleaned and rinsed everything and it still has problems starting. I had to take it out of the water and put it back in several times to get it to start. This pump is only two weeks old, and like I said I have had problems with it since the first time I plugged it in. See below for a link to the drive unit I have. Nothing comes out of the end where the propeller is to make contact with the propeller housing. If I need a new drive unit is that something you can send me? I don't think I should be out of pocket for it already.

If you look at the inside of the cross hatch on the front cover, you will see what stops the prop when it spins backwards, their are fins on each cross that project inward. I am in the US and only handle US sales and service, you would need to contact your dealer or distributor but it should be covered under warranty. I am fairly sure a new 6065.701 will solve the problem.

Hi Roger. After your last reply I spoke with my LFS and they asked I let it run for a while to see if the fins you spoke about would wear down and no longer interfere with the proper operation of the pump. OK, so I give it some time. Today I needed to do a partial water change and again the pump does not start up. This one really puzzles me! I take it out of my warm salt water tank and put it in a bucket of cold fresh water and it starts right up, no problem. Weird! I put it back in my warm salt water tank and it won't start. Put it back in a bucket of cold fresh water and it starts right up again. Back in the tank, no way will it start. Any ideas on that? Please let me know.

The front cover should NOT wear and is a very unlikely culprit, you need a new drive unit 6065.701, the one you have is too tight and that is why the temperature makes a difference. I have seen this a few times, that part is fitted by hand as needed, they usually fit out of the mold but their is some variation between shafts and the bore in the drive units that can necessitate the person in assembly ream the bore slightly. For that matter you could do the same, just take a drill bit that is barely too big to fit in the bore of the drive unit (prop and magnet assembly) and ream it out with a drill, it should barely shave off anything but a bit of powder or small shavings.
