Brando's 180 Gallon in Wall!!!

Just reviewing my build thread, I've developed a lot of patience and letting my tank takes it course.

4/25/2014 - all fish gone
5/11/2014 - started cycling tank again
7/02/2014 - purchased anthias from diver's den

anthias in qt since 7/2/2014

My anthias will be out of QT on 8/16

I think the next fish into the QT will be:

1. Midas Blenny
2. Flame Angel
3. ? - not sure what to do

Well I lost my male anthias in QT it looks like, I think there was an issue with the salt I used to do my water change with because right after the tank was very cloudy/milky white. Blah!

I moved the remaining 2 anthias to my DT, hopefully whatever got the male I wasn't too late and they are okay.

I hate this hobby sometimes

So nothing much to update on the tank really. I had 3 anthias in QT, 1 of them didn't make it. I think it died due to an issue with a salt mix I did for a water change. Lesson learned!

Right now the other 2 are currently in my display, one of the females is moving towards a male.

My buddy Steve found a trio of females on Diver's Den, so I picked them up today :). The beauties will be here on Saturday, making for a total of 5 Maldives Anthias.

I picked up Sea and Reef clownfish today, 2 pairs of picasso clownfish grade a, 2 snow onyx, and a phantom clownfish. In addition two black neon dottybacks.

I am going to be setting up a JBJ Led Pro tank in a few days. I plan on having the phantom + maybe a snow onyx or picasso in my 180g. 2 piccasos in my jbj. and maybe a pair in my fuge :shh:

Still up in the air on the fuge ones since I'd be the only one who see them and the tank is packed full of rock and macro.

Oh and I also have 4 anthias in my display now all doing really well!

Nitrate 100 Salifert
Phosphate 0.1 Hanna
Alk 8.568 Hanna
Mag 1440 Salifert
Cal 450 Red Sea

I realize my nitrates are high, plan is to do a 25g water change tomorrow.

Also today I swapped out my gfo & carbon, I am really starting to hate the BRS reactors.

Thank you,

Today I swapped out a pump on my saltwater mixing bin and have salt mixing to do a water change. Hoping a few 25g changes will get my nitrates down to safe levels.

So I was having an issue where my cheato and my red algae kept getting lost in my fuge. To fix this issue I built a chamber out of some plastic mesh to keep them under the led/from floating away.

I am still looking for a replacement LED bulb to cover my 40 breeder with, but cannot seem to find a good one.

Uploading a video now of my display as of 9/1/2014

Added maxspect gyre on my overflow to replace my WP60, this thing is really great. Still tweaking the angle of flow and power settings, but overall very impressed with it.

how do you like it turned like that? Everyone I see is putting them the other way..

signed a curious 180 gallon owner ;)

My tank is a peninsula and having it that way works REALLY well, I am considering trying it at the other end where I had my wp60 originally, but with the way my scape is setup it works so well.

After owning tunze, vortechs, jebaos, and now this idk if I'd ever run a traditional powerhead again.

Just ordered a powder blue tang and hippo tang from diver's den :x should be here Thursday.... first fish I'm adding since 08/23/2014

They will be placed in my 55g QT to get them eating/adjusted and I'll observe them for a minimum 2 weeks before moving to my display.

I plan on only treating if necessary, if I treat I picked up the new life spectrum ick shield powder and I have prazi-pro.

I have good experiences with diver's den and don't foresee there being any issues. Fingers crossed as these are 2 fish that I absolutely love!

well I just got home and found my powder blue dead in my QT and my hippo is laying on its side. idk if it was due to the cold or what, but I'm really ****ed!

Brando457 - Did you clean your QT from the last time you used it? Also are all your heaters and everything working on your QT? Sorry to hear your lost.

yes I gave it a nice wipe down, cleaned it, etc. I used all new water, all new media and whatnot.

Heaters are working, thermo shows at 78 and heaters turning off at 78 degrees.

The hippo is swimming and ate today some mysis, I am praying that it pulls through. I am mixing the 25g of water for a 10g water change tomorrow.

DD had a PBT today, but I refrained from ordering. The lady at DD said to wait 2 weeks to make sure the hippo is okay before ordering a replacement fish.

I need to figure out if I should QT the hippo for at least 4 weeks then put in display and reorder the pbt or let the hippo be for 2 weeks, order pbt, then qt both for 4 weeks.

The pbt was gorgeous too which makes me even more upset. Anytime I lose fish it makes me sad :(.

Bummer. The word "quarantine" is based on the Italian word for "forty" so take a clue from that. 55 gal is not very big for such active fish. Do you have some sort of filter media to treat amonia? Are you moving/aerating the water to keep oxygen levels up? Do you have adequate hiding places so the fish can feel secure when stressed?

I don't get your italian reference at all.

55 gallon for a quarantine tank is big enough for such an active specifmen. Once the fish was done in QT it'd be going in my 180g display. People quarantine fish much larger in 30 gallon tanks all the time.

The filter media was media I had in my sump for the past 2 months and was fully cycled. I even tested ammonia few days prior to ordering/the fish coming in to ensure it was safe.

Water is moved by a marineland hob filter approx 500gph and a koralia powerhead 1200 gph.

There are approximately 6-8 pieces of pvc elbows large enough for the fish to swim in to and hide.

I think the issue might have been either a bad fish or due to the shipping in the cold that caused the death.

I ran tests on the tank tonight ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate less than 10, ph 8.2, salinity 1.023.

They were just guesses since you provided no information at all.

The word "quarantine" comes from the days of the Black Plague when incoming ships were made to wait forty days before they could dock at Venice. Forty days is a much more reasonable quarantine period than just two weeks.
