A friend emailed me I had questions on this thread, I tried to bail out earlier as didnt want to get into a p*****g contest. Earlier suggestion to check archives and do a search didnt go over well. Funny, 55 years in the hobby and I got the same advice on another thread and said thanks and took the advi ce and got the info I wanted. It was delivered a lot more cursely then I did it.
Nuff on this.
I kept my breeding groups in 30Ls, a few small liverocks but mostly macroalgaes, with a little practice it wasnt too hard to isolate/herd brooding males, eventually I made a piece of plexiglass that I could just slide down once the male was herded to one end or the other, then netting was easy, you can also slip a jar over to prevent the ocassional one who'd spit them out in a net, never had it happened with the jar,
The six tank figure is very ball park even for a small breeder, it could easily grow from there when you figure in fry rearing tanks.
Anyhow, I used 20Hs for brooding tanks and they worked well, had a HAB with large sponge filter over the siphon, plus a couple airstones, and several pcs of live rock plus. Once the male released him he was moved back to the group tank. I liked groups of 6-8 adults. Once in awhile I'd find fry in that tank which is where the macroalgae came in handy, plus a couple pcs of staghorn and several urchins. With the filtration, and aeration plus weekly partial water changes I didnt have any problems with water quality. And the broods where rotifers were fed were my best, in numbers and size.
To me a ten gallon is not suitable, but thats an opinion, based on my experiences.
