Breeding Log: Pterapogon Kaudnerni

Adam, this should bring a little smile to your face. Your bigger Bangaii baby is pretty bold, while the smaller one still hides some.

But, he can be a little shy and hide. Can you see how fat he is now?

Their parents were shy too, unless they knew you were putting food in the tank :D. So doesn't surprise me. And yes, that large guy is a piggy. In that first pic you can almost make out the squarish jawline of that dude, one of the reasons that leads me to believe he's a male, that and on a few occasions I got to see him "yawn". That little guy can open his mouth large enough to engulf the smaller fella. it's kinda cool. :D
How are their fins doing? Healing up alright? Caught the flamehawk doing that one to the PJ's yesertday, so I now know the culprit!

The fins are 100% healed over and they both are starting to get streamers on the dorsal spines and soft rays. You can see a little nub of extra skin flapping in the current when they are holding still.

Update: Still no breeding pair since the Male bangaii died off several month back, due to poor water quality I'm assuming. Tanks still in the process of all that. Female is still good and looking lonely.

Still have a couple juvi's that have finally been moved to their own system and out of my 2.5 nano tank. They originally went into my 42g hex, then to a 29g that wound up busting open last weekend, so now there back in the 42g again. Doing well, eating frozen mysis and cyclopeeze granules and freeze dried cyclopeeze. I"ve got a good notion that these fella's are a male/female pair as well, just by the way they seem to interact and stay next to one another constantly.

I've also been experimenting with the feeder guppies lately, and would like to add that I witnessed my female bangaii devoir a 2" guppy with absolutley no effort on her part. One quick swipe at the feeder and it's history after that. Jess was convinced that she missed, but I had to correct her and say, "that fish is just that fast!"

Sounds like things are progressing as good as you can without another male. The two babies that I got from you are growing like weeds. The largest of the two is about as big as my clownfish, and the smallest is starting to catch up. The smallest is starting to come out to the middle of the tank more. I still cannot confirm a pairing with these yet, and I'm beginning to think that it might be two females. They don't fight with each other, but they don't really stay together often.

To how big the largest one is now

As you can tell from the picture, it stays in the same spot often.

Actually, now that I see those pictures side by side, I can tell you that the Bangaii is in almost the exact same spot. The Ricordea in the second picture is in the crevice that you see in the first picture.

The jawline is really filling out on the bigger one. I almost want to call it a boy, but it shows no interest in the other bangaii. What gender do you think it is from the picture?

New Broodstock

New Broodstock

Been awhile since I've done anything other than feeding my current bangaii's so after a few months of inactivity, Travis has helped to jumpstart this project once again. He and I recently recieved 4 new 8 week old juvi's from a fellow reefer in New York. While our original plans called for many more babies to obtain an appropriate amount of broodstock, these 4 should at least ensure each of us will have a breeding pair. I'll have pictures available tommorrow or shortly thereafter so in the meantime here's the skinny:

Bangaii's arrived Monday, 2 were unfortunatly DOA and the other 4 were kinda sketchy but seemed to have pulled through the shipping ordeal and have since been acclimated and settled into a 42g Hex tank (luckily me and jess were lazy about taking this tank down, so it was in prime condition for use as a larger holding tank.)

Immediatly after introduction to the tank, 3 of these fella's ran straight for the DIY urchin I had previously made. Suprising since all my bangaii's previously seemed to have been scared silly by this thing. These new guys love it! Eventually the 4th baby came out and started hanging out in the urchin along with his brethren.

None were eating anything i tried, even baby brine shrimp would not temp them. I attributed this to the stress of the whole move. Who knows, maybe oklahoma is just too quiet compared to new york. I had the same trouble when I moved here from Arizona, lol. But after a few days, they have started to nip at the newly hatched baby brine. Unfortuantly this didn't set right that they would only occasionally nip at them but wouldn't gourge themselves like all my others have. So plan B comes into effect. i took the smallest of my other two bangaii's, one from a previous spawning, and about 5+ months old now I think. Anyways, he got stuck in with the babies, and even though he's twice their size, he swam straight to the urchin and the little guys just follow him around like he's the big brother of the group. I then started added cycloppeze soaked in Garlic Guard (seachem) and some Selcon. Naturally my little fella would go nuts eating as much as he could and it took only a few feedings for the babies to start trying as well. They still don't go after the food with the same gusto as the older fish, but they are at least making the effort now. I"ll continue the cycloppeze and brine shrimp until they are old enough to fit the pellets in their mouths. I'm sure this change in diet is exciting to the older bangaii, he's been on Microcrabs, nutrafin, thera A, and loads of other foods for awhile now.

So to sum up, 4 new babies, starting to eat better, and all looking good at the moment. still too small and young for any kind of sexing attempts but hopefully here in a couple months they'll get with the program. :D

fwiw, the oldest of my bangaii's is still in the 55g all to himself now that his tankmates are all gone. I don't think he's minding at all though, he really didn't show any interest in the other bangaii I removed from his tank. pretty sure this guy is a male, which will help in sexing the babies once they are older.

Anything you'd like to add Travis? And as mentioned, I'll get some photo's up soon for ya. Got several of them all swimming together and playing in the urchin. Too cute. Sure did miss the pitter patter of baby fins in the house.

Not really. I'm just excited to get some captive bred broodstock to advance the gene pool for these guys. Unfortunately, I think my two that I got from Adam many months ago are far too large to go with any of the new fish.

yeah but the babies will grow up in no time, maybe we'll end up with a small female who likes the older males, lol

I'd also like to add, these new babies are 2nd generation captive bred/raised bangaii's.

We're going to breed them and raise more babies!

My goal is to have around 4-6 breeding pairs so if all goes well, at most I'll have 2 breeding pairs here (after travis gets his an all). And then I get to start in trying to raise these guys on a slightly bigger operation than before. My previous attempts were more for education and fun, now I'd like to get into this to help curb the cost of my hobbies as well as provide captive bred/raised individuals for sale vs. having ya'll go out and get wild caught specimens.
