Breeding Ocellaris Clowns - My unexpected attempt!

Subman,
I'm so happy to find your thread today! I too noticed an unexpected spawning with my True Perculas this afternoon! Now, I know that the first spawn is usually unsuccessful, with few eggs & most of them eaten by the parents...but, I had a few questions - maybe we can learn from each other;
Thank you umluis! Congrats on the spawn! I agree that hopefully we can learn from each other. That's why we're all here! One VERY IMPORTANT thing I can tell you that I've learned this past week is get yourself set up with live Rotifers! Probably the "S" strain. These are the only food that the fry will accept that will give you the best outcome (from what I hear)! I just lost a batch of Yellowhead Sleeper Gobies because of not having them. I just placed my first order for some from www.seahorsesource.com I should see them on Thursday. The only day that these ship is Tuesdays so if you want them by this week, you'll need to place the order today. You can also call and ask for Abby (772)-462-2401. Most likely she'll answer the phone. Tell her, "Bob-The clownfish guy" sent you! She'll get a kick out of it! Even if I don't get another spawn, I'll still use the live Rotifers as food for my corals. Since it's probably too late to order and get them by this week, maybe see if someone local to you has them. Unfortunately, no LFS in my area carries live Rotifers so that's why I have to mail order.

Here's two great threads that helped me:

1) How did you get your newly hatched baby clowns into another tank? Mine eggs are on THE LARGEST rock in my tank, so I would either have to remove them from the rock or try to catch the larva that hatch in about a week...any pointers?

I used a Brine Shrimp Net, however as you've seen above, I missed the clowns and caught everything else! LOL :( Also, as you can see from my photos, I'm in the EXACT same boat as you with the large burried rock problem. I fell asleep the night they hatched but woke up twice, once the eggs were half gone and the second time (about an hour or so later) the remainder of the eggs were gone. I thought I was catching the clowns with the net but unfortunately, we know how that story ends! :(

As you read through the other two threads I listed above (one being FB's and the other dazed's), you'll find that they also had our initial delemas. The solutions are to use a ceramic tile as shown here by FB,

675 Eggs for this batch!

and the other trick (if you're not doing the tile trick) is to make a "larvae trap" as shown here by dazed:

Update time: Well since this time around my female decided to lay the eggs on a rock that is not removable due to my bta i have borrowed an idea from agsansoo's thread and have tried to make a larvae snagger to try and catch this next batch of fry. I still need to figure out how to attach it to my tank and where to cut the slot to gather the fry.
The box is 13"L x 8"w x 4"d.

I ended up using a 3" coupling & aquarium silicone to attach the pvc & coffee filter together

Current batch of eggs was laid on 7/17/08; so today is day 7 and there are a bunch of little silver eyes staring back at me:D

I have noticed with this clutch as well that the reduction of the number of eggs is very few since they were laid so i really think that those peppermint shrimp were part of the problem.

2) Can an anemone's sting kill the eggs? I've noticed my parents being pretty aggressive towards my rose anemone during spawning.

I'd love to see what everyone things/have experienced.

Unfortunately I can't accurately answer that last question but I would guess that since clowns naturally host in anemones, the eggs wouldn't get stung. The reason why clowns don't get stung is because the slime coating they excrete is the same chemically as what the anemones excrete therefore the anemone can't tell the difference between the clown and itself.

Hope this helps!

If anyone here finds any of my information to be inaccurate, please feel free to correct me! The last thing I want is give out wrong information! Thanks!

Those eggs are hatching tonight, I can almost guarantee it.

Good luck

Are you refering to "MY" day 8 photo? If so, they hatched exactly when yours did, Saturday night.

dazed- Welcome to my dungeon!!! LOL :)

Non Clown related question...

Non Clown related question...

I do have an "off topic" question for anyone who knows... I found this little guy hanging out in one of my Acroporas for about a month now and I don't know what kind of crab he is and if he's dangerous to my corals? This coral hasn't had any of it's pollups come out since I got it and I'm wondering if this crab is the cause? He is a cute little bugger and I would hate to have to get rid of him!

Oh yeah! Something I can answer! :)

That's an Acropora Crab - they are harmless to your corals and usually eat small bits of food that get stuck to your acro's branches. I have one myself, and he's never posed a problem. In fact, they are said to be beneficial to SPS corals - eating parasites before they cause damage.

You can throw him back in your tank, near his home, and he'll be perfectly fine!

Thank you sooooooo much! I'll put him right back in the coral I took him out of! He looks so sad in the quaranteen tank. :(

Yes I was refering to your eggs. From one of the statments you made I thought you still had some and the photo were the eggs you still had. My mistake. Have you put a tile over that spot yet?

Not yet. I keep forgetting to stop and get one. Any particular brand, size, color, texture and should I get it from Home Depot or Lowes??? LOL :lolspin: I do have a delema though regarding placement... there's no where for it to just "sit" there. I may have to make up some sort of bracket or pedistal. How soon will they start to lay eggs again?

I expect mine to lay either thursday or friday night. They ussually have a 2 week cycle. So you should have another batch of eggs hatching around the 13th or 14th.

My tile is about 6" X 2" and is just a plain ceramic tile. I guess I lucked out where mine layed their eggs. All I had to do was lean the tile against the rock.

they sure look like Clown Fry to me.. I still don't get it though. They are waaay bigger than BBS. You would have a very hard time getting a pic like that of BBS without a macro lens.

Does anyone know where I can get cheap decapsulated brine shrimp eggs?

I've already ordered my rotifers & rotifer diet (microalgae), and just need to make sure I have the next stage in feeding for my little perculas ready - they should be hatching in about a week! :)

Funny you should mention the "Macro" Lens... I just ordered one today and it will be here tomorrow! I finally sucked it up and spent the money. Tired of not being able to get the shots I want! It's a 105mm - f2.8 with 1:1... Do you think that will work? Those shots I posted were with my Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens @ 200mm - f5.6... Great lens for Poparazzi shots but not popa-"larvae"! LOL :lol2:

So did i miss it or did you confirm that you caught larvae or mysis?
I need a macro lens as well, that should be a nice pick up.

dazed- I still don't know what it is that I got but I'm pretty darn sure it's NOT fish! My clowns just laid another batch of eggs yesterday. I started a new post with the details and photos last night but reef centrals servers started to do maintenance just as I was getting ready to post so I lost it all. Will be reposting soon!

New Batch of Clown Eggs

New Batch of Clown Eggs

Ok folks, here we go again!:crazy1: My clowns just laid a new batch of eggs yesterday! This is batch #2. I totally wasn't expecting this so soon considering the last batch just hatched 5 days earlier! I looked at my tank yesterday around 5pm and there was nothing there, although my female clown's belly looked a little swollen. I went out, came back at 9pm and wolla! There were a ton of eggs! UUUUGGGHHHHH!!!:crazy1:

I wanted to do the "tile" trick but the darn buggers didn't give me a chanch! That's what I get for slacking off! Even though I'm not totally prepared yet for this hatch, I'm working on it. Because they laid the eggs on the largest rock again, I'm devising several different "larvae catchers" to hopefully cover all angles and catch most of them. I'll post pics when they're completed.

I just received my first batch of supplies from Seahorse Source www.seahorsesource.com which includes live S and L strain Rotifers, Copepods, Decapsulated Artemia and various Micro Algaes to feed them.

rkelman-
I just got my new lens yesterday, right before I found the new batch of eggs (what perfect timing)! It's a SIGMA 105mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO. I wasn't sure about getting a Sigma because I like to stick with the Nikon's, however, I didn't want to spend the extra money! This lens is sooooo different from my others so It'll take me a little while to get my shots right.

Did they lay them in a different spot this time?
Yeah, slightly forward of where they were the last time. Here's a couple pics for comparison. Oh, by the way... can you count these for me? LOL :)

NO, not with that picture.

It may be easier to place a tile there now that it is vertical!
