Hey everybody

i decided to give it a shot,

i started 3 days ago micro algea culture and today i started the rotifier culture.

i was wondering if anyone here ever attempted to raise peppermint shrimp. and if you guys could give me some tips

i was thinking about siphoning the larve from the aquarium before they all being eaten.

my shrimps spawn about once a week

thanks guys

You can raise them, most people just don't find it practicle considering the wholesale value. There is a cute little book, How to Raise and Train Your Peppermint Shrimp , not exactly an academic masterpiece but it will tell you everything you need to know. I believe Amazon has it. The authors name is April Kirksomething , I forget and can't find my copy.

WIERD David, I turned around to my bookshelf and my copy is gone too!

FWIW, they are probably VERY easy to raise...I had a lone larvae that lasted 16+ days in with my current GBG batch. I also had a small hatch last night, only managed to collect 6 larvae, but was thinking I might throw them in a breeder net in a larval tank and give 'em a shot. While the online pricing is VERY low, LFS's seem to carry many of them and generally sell them for $10-20 a shot, so hooking up with the right LFS may make them worthwhile, or selling them off to individual hobbyists who might be willing to give you $10 each locally.

One last thing, I believe they don't need rotifers but can go straight to enriched brine nauplii.

Good luck!

Matt

Matt is right, forget about algae and rots and start hatching bs!:D

I am a lousy breeder most of the times, but this last time I raised over 200 of these guys, pretty easy.
I was offered about $3 ea.by a lfs.Not bad considering they are half grown and not very colorful.
There are several species of peppermints.Try to choose a pretty one like wurdemanni if you plan to sell them.Good luck!:)

thanks for all the input :)

what is the best way of collecting the little guys without damaging them?

and could i start feeding them with rots or not?

thanks , motti

Turn off all lights except maybe a dim table lamp at a distance so you don't stub your toes :D Use a flashlight to attract them and scoop with a cup or siphon them out, having an extra set of hands is helpful but not necessary.

You need nhbbs, they may not take the rotifers.

one last question i think :)

since it takes abour 48 hours to hatch bbs.... should i start hatching them so i have them availbe for when the little guys hatch or when ps hatch i need to start hatching the bs?

I agree, they are not that hard to raise. I move the adult to a seperate tank on about the 9th day until they hatch. I only fed bbs right from day one and supliment with fine ground flakes after 2 weeks. use newly hatched brine shrimp to start. should only take 10 - 20 hours to hatch depending on brine shrimp species not 48 hours. after. Weird looking larvae.

Agreed--easy/fun to raise, just not practical...although after I gave all of mine away and stopped working with them, it seemed like everyone wanted to buy them

mine shrimp hatched out but never survived in my 24 gallon tank. either got death from the power head or the clowns probably ate them. I managed to capture some larve on video. It is up on my site. I got a new batch of shrimp now and one has eggs. I really like when they spawn. very neat to track. good luck.

Fishboy,cute shrimp!:)
They are L.boggessi, the same species I raised.
Not the prettiest but perhaps the easiest:cool:

Wow Luis, how do you tell if they are L. boggessi or L. wurdemanni? Any distinct differences? :)

Those who had sucess.. Did you use rotifers or baby brine shrimp? I have raised tomato clownfish before but I don't feel like culturing the algae again and I would like to try the peppermints.

Flashligt sucks!:D Clamp an incandescent linght over the tank. You need both hands for siphoning!;)
