Breeding stations

I would like to see some pics of your breeding stations.

I am gathering info to start my own breeding station in the spring for either clowns, H Reidi seahorses or Banggai Cardinals....Have not made up my mind as of yet.

And an equipment list would be great....Trying to figure out exactly what I need.

This is the only such picture I have on this computer. :fun4: It's the back of a 12-tank system.

I got some, duplicates from my other thread, but no way to tell if you've seen them.

What information are you looking to get. I got more but donot want to overwhelm. I sense you live close to me since I've seen you on CincyReef???

HA If I knew I'd probably be buying them  but alas, I do not know anyone currently. Just keep your eyes on the message boards, they do come up from time to time but you'll want to make sure that you're not getting ripped off. Keep in mind that even if they are eggs layers, by the time they ship to you they may take several months or more to get back into the swing of things. Also keep in mind that you may simply have more luck looking for someone selling an older single that you could pair up. I recently did just that, paired a single male Percula with an older female and had them laying faster than some that I purchased as proven egg layers.

In any case it will take time, it's inevitable. Plan out what you may want to do as far as breeding goes. Breeding Rack cost $$$ to build. I think I spent about 500+ getting mine together. Most of the money went to wards my skimmer and the rest I built myself from HomeDepot stuff (wood, lights, etc...). By the time you've got it all setup you'll probably have seen a couple pairs go up on the block for sale.

I have heard that there is someone breeding Gold Striped Maroon down in Lexington althought the name escapes me.

Lastly, not to be a ReefCentral killjoy but there are other website dedicated to breeding that also have for sale post that you might want to look at for broodstock.

What size tanks are on that rack. I'm doing seperate systems right now, are you keeping your pairs in that closed system, or is that just for broodstock. I wanted to do a single closed system, but I'm afraid of disease spreading. Even QT tanks don't eliminate all the odds. It would make maintenance alot simpler only having to deal with one common sump.

8 ten gallon aquariums and a central 25 gallon sump. I keep the whole lot of them in there pairs, babies, etc... I have fears of disease from time to time but since I do not introduce new fish without first doing a separate QT it makes me feel "A little better".

awesome setup, do you have any details or info that would be good for someone starting out breeding? I would like to know more about the process of how it's done, and also what equipment is used, and how you keep the fish from going into the sump, thanks...

what kind of 10g are those.. It looks like you plumbed it through the bottom of the tank. Aren't most standard 10G tanks tempered.. and are not drillable through the bottom?

I never knew that. I've got two 10g aqueon and two from walmart. Anyway to tell? I remember having a 10g tank before that wasn't clear on the bottom. It had a weird texture. My current tanks are all clear on all 5 sides.

What are you interested in trying to breed? Most people start with clownfish (though I can't ever seem to get them to spawn), but it's easier to raise banggai babies. Dwarf seahorses are supposed to be easy to raise and breed prolifically. Neon gobies are also supposed to be pretty easy, if you can get them paired.

All the fish I mentioned have their own unique challenges. So, it's really all about you: What species motivates you and makes you excited to start?

In general, you need a place for broodstock to live. You need a way to get larvae out of there. You need a place to raise larvae. And you need places to grow out the babies once they aren't babies any longer. Oh, and you need to start learning to culture rotifers at the bare minimum, and probably to learn how to hatch brine shrimp.

You can do searches in this forum for tons of good information.

All 8 of the tanks I have in my rack are 10 gallon aqueons, to which I have drilled the sides. There are some tricks you can you to tell if the glass is tempered. Polarized glasses I believe is one. I also heard something about looking at the screen of a laptop PC through the glass you want to check and if it's polarized something won't look right, maybe someone else can chime in to clear up what I probably got wrong...
