Breeding System

OK Folks,

Now is the time of truth. It has finally arrived.
I am putting together a breeding system that is going to be built on a frame that is 72"x24"x60".
I have managed to locate some tanks that are 24"x12"x15" for a staggering sum of Ã"šÃ‚£1 each.

So the million dollar question is this.

What have you done to the tanks if anything?
i.e. Painted the sides black or the bottom white?

I will be collecting 4 of these tomorrow so that I can see what I need to do to them.

They will all be drilled (in the bottom) or do you do the side?
They will be placed on the rack which is 24" wide, so that in the 72" I can get 6 tanks.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I painted my outside tank bottom white, and it helps with cleaning the bottom once the larvae are in. Alternatively you could paint the shelf white and leave the tank bottom clear.

thought you might follow with interest.

these will be on a central sump system, running with calurpa and sand bed with Live Rock, along side this I will have a trickle filter that is about 4' to deal with the large amount of fish in the system eventually, (i hope). To get maximum benefit from the trickle filter I will be putting air in at the bottom.

When a tank has fry, it will be isolated from the system and have an air filter till the fry are big enuff to be put on the central system.

Hope this helps. I will be taking pictures as I go along.

Please Ed, Can you show us your system? I know its professional and larger than the average breeders', but we need photos!

That is neat and Clean. Would be interested in knowing how he deals with the light when there are larvae around?

What does your system look like Ed and thanks for the comments to a humble beginner.

Well day 0 has arrived.
Spent the day yesterday cleaning tanks and today the racking gets built. I will post pictures either later tonight or tomorrow morning.

I cannot wait for this to start then the hunt begins.

Well, Well, Well,

Some 100+ screws and a second trip to the timber yard and the frame is built. Sorry no pics as yet as I have not taken any.

One thing that I need to say is that I never thought that it would be this big.....:D :D :D

Will take some pics tomorrow and then post for you.

Every Do-it-yourself project, no matter how simple, requires several trips to the hardware or lumber store. It is a given. At times I think it would be easier to just move the household next door to the hardware store.

You are so rithg. There is one thing on this though, scope creep. When I originally thought of doing this, it was a case of a small number of tanks, well now, there is a large number of tanks. From planning for 12 I now can go to 24 tanks. Not sure what happened. Room for expansion I suppose. :D

Kathy, I have no idea. I will only start with about 12.
The original plan was to start with Bangaii Cardinals, Clowns and then take it from there.

Plus start propagating soft corals. Specifically Ricordea mushrooms as these are not readily available in the UK.

With the fact that the tanks will be bottom drilled, it means that I can easily adjust the amount of water in the tanks. This means that I can have about 8" of water to cater for the ricordea.

There are a couple of other corals that I will propagate too, so it is not only a fish system.

Hope this makes sense.

PS: Project creep or scope creep, I am not sure what you want to call it, but is has grown since I first started looking at it nearly a year ago.

Probably over ambitious. But I plan to begin the process slowly and see how we go.

Folks,

Finally some pictures for you all to see.

This is first picture show the right hand side of the unit and you can see how one of the tanks sit on the unit.

This second shot shows three of the tanks positioned. The one downside is that there is the upright inthe way of one of the tanks in the set of three. But my feeling is that this is something that I can live with.

The last one is the current phyto station that I have going. Although this might be replace with a pure rotifer and bbs factory if I switch to using the Instant Algae.

Looks good but try not to have any tanks behind posts, murphys law says thats the one that breaks and you have breeders on each side you wouldnt want to mess with.

Otherwise looks pretty good.

yes I have forgotten about Murphy and his law. I should be collecting the rest of the tanks this week or next so I will see what works best then.

But yes I agree with you on that score now and it is one that I never thought of before.
