Brine Shrimp Anyone?

Ok, I was inspired to start hatching brine shrimp after the cmas meeting so I went to brineshrimpdirect.com and found that the smallest container you can order is a pound. I think 16 oz is a lot more than I am likely to use in any reasonable amount of time...

So, if anyone else wants some I can make the following portions available for up to a total of 10 oz. (I'm keeping 6 ounces for myself):

2 ounces: $10
4 ounces: $12
6 ounces: $14
8 ounces: $16
10 ounces: $18

I don't think it make sense to re-ship, so pick up is in Naperville.
 
You could also check with Rod and maybe purchase some from/through him.

I have my first batch brewing and it will be ready tonight! I'm hoping my orange banded pipefish will appreciate the treats!
 
Sara & purcell...the WHOLE tank LOVES the brine shrimp...i've been doing it for months now and it is so easy to do! Good Luck!
 
I just received a shipment from brineshrimptdirect and I was able to get a small bottle of it. It is the shell-less one.
Which one did you get?
 
I ordered from them last month-Premium Grade Brine Shrimp Eggs, 8 Ounces 21$ shiped?

When you feed it to your tank, try to turn off the overflow to the sump and skimmer if you can. I usually feed 1/2 of a teaspoon and turn off the return pump for about an hour. Sara-my blueside pipefish love them--I think they have spawned already, looks like one of them is carrying!

Glad to hear they are a hit with the pipefish! And thanks, I was wondering if I should shut down my pumps while feeding them. Just to clarify ... do you feed a 1/2 teaspoon worth of the dry eggs hatched, or do you feed 1/2 of the hatched brine? I don't want to overdo it with feeding. Also, how often do you feed your tank the brine?

I feed half a teaspoon of unhatched. The water in the tank turns orange cause it's so think with brine, but after an hour I can only find a few stragglers here and there....I have 6 anthia's that go absolutely crazy for them. I would like to try feeding at night though, when the SPS's are out..

BTW ppurcell in my above post I was just pointing out that BSD shiped smaller quantities-your price is good, I would have saved 7 bucks if this had been posted last week! For anyone interested in feeding brine take a quick look here for a how too, it is very easy! Sorry for the mini-hijack..

You are right! I just looked and I see that I didn't drill down on the option menu on the left to see the smaller sizes.

So, I can still order the larger size and share (It's a lot more cost effective); but if nobody is interested, I'll just order a smaller size.
 
they sell thier brine shrimp eggs in 1.75 oz, 8oz, 16 oz and larger sizes
I ussualy buy the 8 oz package, lasts a long time

the decapped are non hatching from them
if you like to use decapped it's very easy
theory being the hatching process is easier on the artemia saving nutrients for what will be eating it
if used between 12-24 hours of hatch they are higher in nutritional value
after that you need to feed and enrich them
also another easy task
 
I fed brine last night and my pipefish was pleased! It was funny to watch my Onyx clowns eating them too!
 
I missed the meeting. Are you using 2 liter bottles like melev?

Are you familiar with brineshrimpdirect's hatching dish?

Hatchery Dish

Their website says:
With absolutely no aeration, air tubing, direct light or heat, my yields were as good as if I had used a more elaborate set-up. With a premeasured charge of about 0.4 grams of dry cysts, the Hatchery Dish yielded over 100,000 baby brine shrimp.

A particularly nice feature of the shallow, dish-like shape of the Hatchery is the naturally occurring separation of the newly hatched nauplii (baby brine shrimp) from shells and unhatched egg - resulting in a very clean harvest.

No siphoning or net is required

Looks much easier. I've been thinking about hatching and want to order the correct eqp.
 
Yes, Rod set me up with the 2 liter bottle method with an airline hose. I will have to check out that link regarding the Hatchery Dish as well.
 
I was under the impression that brine shrimp are not real nutritious. I've heard them compared to cotton candy. Am I mistaken?
