Broken Heater

My 4 pairs of clowns in a particular system quit spawning a month or so ago. I attributed it to the lighting schedule change. However, I noticed yesterday that one of the two heaters in the sump was broken and rusted. The entire end was shattered and the element was all rusted. I am not sure how long it had been that way, I always run two heaters.

Is there anything in the heater that would cause them to stop spawning? I don't think there is any copper in there at any level that would get into the water at any level that would prohibit them from spawning, but I am not sure.
