Broken pump shaft

well i was cleaning my pump the other day and broke the ceramic shaft in it. The pump is not made any more so i cannot seem to be able to find a replacement. I need a 1/8" x 2-9/16" ceramic shaft. what else can I use? The pump sits in my HOB Skimmer so it is in the tank water all the time. I was considering either Stainless Steel or Acrylic rod but having a fun time locating them in the Tampa area. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can use? How about where I can find the stuff.

I actually found 1/8" acrylic rod at a plastic supply shop. Now i get the joys of cutting it to length. Wonder how long this rod will last.

acrylic is really not a good choice..
It "can" swell with water absorption and lock up the pump..
But it sure is easy to cut..

Good luck...

What pump btw? a replacement part may still be available..

It is a Resun king 225F. What would be a better choice for a replacement shaft? The only thing I could find was for a Sedra 2500 out in California and they wanted $5.00 for shaft and an additional $15.00 to ship it. the thing is only 1/8" x 2-9/16". If i could find a ceramic shaft around Tampa I sure would or even in Chicago since I have family there that could get it to me.

Have you looked at eheim replacement shaft 7443100? They are ceramic but I don't know the diameter offhand. Most decently stocked LFS should carry these.

I will go try that. I got home tonight, cut the rod to length then noticed it is 1/4" not 1/8". Talk about not a happy camper. Well it's back to square one I guess.

You should be able to find stainless steel rod 1/8" online. Just look for 316 or 316L (better) steel. No commonly used 303 (will corrode quickly)

I broken my Jebao wavemaker pump shaft. Ordered replacement from China. For time being (3 weeks or so) I decided to use wooden toothpick. Replacement came 6 month ago. Still sitting in its box. Toothpick is working just fine

I have some spare ceramic impeller shafts laying around. Can you confirm the exact diameter is 1/8? I'll get my hands on them here in a few and get a measurement of the ones I have.

I will have to verify when I get home tonight from work.

OK, let me know what you come up with. The one I have is .140 or 9/64 diameter, it is over 3" long so you will need to cut it length and I'm not sure how to cut ceramic as it is some pretty hard stuff.

Or as Vinny said, try a hobby shop, there should be one in your area, they will have an assortment of carbon fiber rod which can easily be cut with a dremel and cut-off wheel. If you go this route make sure to use the solid rod and not hollow.
