Brooklynella or Ich?

Ok, I've read about both and from that I picked up some of the details.

Brooklynella seems to be a rather quick killer so would it be safe to assume a fish that has survived for 3-5 days with white cottony-like spots mostly on tail and around mouth probably has Ich?

Hmmm....based on your brief description I would say your fish have neither. Sounds more like lymphocystis .
