So question 1, is it an algae or a diatom and I've heard this is a good thing????

question 2, whats my next step?

question 3, WHO WANTS A TACO?

Seriously though, I love this site... even the people that yell at me. This hobby fosters so much learning I'm extremely excited to involve my kids in it.

PS: Temper your aggression bros and gals, I've surely survived worse than this at this point in my life. :frog::dance:

Both! Diatoms are an algae. Natural part of a new tank. Standard maintenance procedure and patience, it will go away

Thats diatoms..
Very normal.. all though you do have it a bit worse than many but certainly not the worst I've ever seen..

Diatoms are typically associated with elevated silicate levels that seem to be common in a new tank and are quickly consumed by the diatoms themselves and not typically replenished in any excessive level unless you have a silicate problem due to inadequate ro/di water filtering,etc...
That why diatoms seems to mostly be just a new tank thing..
