Brown Algae

I have brown Algae growing like rampant in my tank. What do I do to fix it? It's taking over the sand the rocks and the plexiglass!

I had 1440 in my 30 gallon. It was all softies and LPS. I'd recommend a little more flow to keep the poop and food suspended in the water. When stuff lands on the sand it gets ugly/dirty or whatever.

Besides that, if the tank is only a month old I'd say it's just going through the cycle still.

params, pH, temp, alk, Ca, NO3 all the biggies if we can help you make sure everything is in check and it is not just diatoms

Salinity and Photoperiod.

If it is below 1.025 in a new tank that will get you some diatoms.

Are your lights on longer than 6 hours a day currently ?
If they are trim them back, you do not have anything to use the photo energy.

Ok I don't have a CA or Alk test yet. But my pH is 8.2 and all other readings are between the lowest and second lowest levels. Temp is about 80ish.

My salinity is lowered becuase of trying to treat that ich problem. I will slowly start increasing it. Also yes this ocurred right when I started running my lights more than I had been. I didn't even realize that could be a cause! I have three lights, a UV Sterlizer, a very high k bulb for daytime light, and then what it calls a moonlight synthesizer which is designed for corals it says.

Once I raise the Salinity and lower the light time, will this start to go away on it's own?

By the way, the 240 pump is what came with the whole setup. Water flows through a filter then through bioballs then into the pump where it pushes it back out again.

I've got a big other purchase coming up but everyone was right I should have just saved a few more months and gone with the 128g that I almost bought. The small tank has had problems happen very quickly. I went from nothing to brown everywhere in about a day and a half.

Your tanks only been up a month, give it time. When I had the 30g I had problems at the beginning, then over time I didn't have to do hardly any maintenance at all.
