Is the brown algae from using water w/a regular filter or having a ok skimmer or a combination of things. Or do you always have to scrape the sides of your tank once a week no matter what your set up is. Thanks for all the opinions

oh yeah----the phosphates will not be removed and the algae are licking their lips:eek2:

I'll never get rid of this muck on the side. Everything else looks good.

I had the same problem tapwater. I got rid of it by using some phosban and started using ro water instead of tap and added skimmer.

I cleaned my glass every day, blew the rocks clean with a turkey baster and cleaned my filter pads and filter floss daily. It took a few weeks for most of it to subside, but it eventually did.

Once you get the phosphates lowered, it should subside.

Sooooooo...There's no way to get rid of it???
Cripes.....

there's lots of ways---but they involve reducing phosphates and nitrates in your tank

reducing the amount you feed at one time and rinsing off frozen food

increasing the flow in your tank to 20-40 times tank volume in gph

adding a phosban reactor and running phosban

adding a refugiium with cheato macro algae

but
sooner of later you will have to invest in an r/o water filter:eek2:

or these methods are not very affective

I can only see corraline algae from the picture--that's a sign of a healthy tank. It can be scraped off.
If you are using a magnetic scrubber you can buy a kit that attaches a scraper too it--works great on corraline
