When they close up and start shriveling they get that brown haze over them

I would guess algae.

I would speculate that it is bacterial. Cyano or Dinos*shudder*

They can close and have any type of brown algae on them, depending on the system.
The reason for them to close could be various, including bacterial infection, then algae grows over.
Same with cyanos and dinos.

My magician colony did suffer of a brown stuff.I still wonder if it was just diatoms.The specimen was wild collected.
I healed with Furan-2 dips+I had to cut the infected polyps.
Also I kept a frag just in case.
A pic would help so we all could learn from your problem,and help if it is possible.

Generally speaking:
Diatoms are related to the system.
Bacterial infection is related to the zoas.

To solve problems with diatoms you need to understand why they are booming and correct the params.
The bacterial infection could be caused by bad water quality and other issues with the system, yes, but the zoas need the attention with dips and specific treatments for the particular type of infection too.
Just so we understand about the differences here.
