BRS Reef Saver & rock scaping questions

We've finally decided to get the BRS Reef Saver rock for our 40 gallon breeder and will probably get around 50 lbs. Does anyone that's used this rock before think this would be a good amount? We're probably looking to do some arches or overhangs, something not too "massive" looking, if you know what I mean. Just don't want to buy way too much or way too little... of course regardless of what I end up getting, it won't be exactly right, but just trying to get close...

Also, I've seen people mention scaping by drilling the rock and using acrylic rods... Can someone point me to some sources?

I think rods might work out better for us in the long run, since the wife likes moving things around occasionally... :twitch:

Thanks!

I've only heard good reviews about their rock. Send them an email and they'll help to pick out the perfect sized rocks for your tank.

I ordered 50lbs of rock from John at Reef Cleaners for my new 90 and today UPS is delivering my nylon threaded rods from US Plastics. I hope to start drilling and setting up the rock this weekend. I have never done this type of aquascaping before so we'll see how it goes.

I used the fiberglass rods that you mark a driveway with. They are like $4 from Lowes. I made sure to get the white ones, as I wasn't sure if the flourescent ones had any special coloring that might not be good for my tank. I have a large circular cutoff tool, like a miter saw, but takes 7" cutoff wheels. I used that for cutting them, but I'm sure you could use a dremel. I used a masonry bit to drill holes into my rock, it's super easy.

It is weighed and shipped dry , so you will get more per lb than typical live rock. I've use quite a bit of it I'd personally be sure to cure it just like live rock to let any organics and accumulated phosphate on it clear out before placing it in the display.

Those "fiberglass rods" sounds like a great idea! I'm assuming you found them to be ok to use in our reefs? If so, I'm all over this!

Oh cool, didn't think about threaded rod. Will have to look around for that.

Would be interested in seeing what your scape looks like when it's done. We've never done anything like this either (only tank so far has been an 8gal and that rock is just stacked).

Thanks everyone for your advice. Pulled the trigger on our BRS order last night and got 50 lbs to start off with.

We'll probably have a few more items to get from them down the road, so I figured if we need more can always order it then. Will try to post pics once we've got the scaping going. Woo hoo!
