Bryopsis outbreak

Thank you for your replies. I'm running an euroreef skimmer. I'm not exactly sure of the model but it is about 8" around at the base has a blue lid and the straight pipe with the round foam over it. I'm getting pretty good skimmate with it. I also have about a basketball sized ball of chaeto in my sump. It's gone way green and happy looking since dosing the tech. Perhaps I need to throw some out. Maybe it's holding phosphates? When I test for phosphates it is always at 0. Same with nitrates. I did have that brief flare up with nitrate but it only lasted a few days then went back down to undetectable. I have taken some pics with my phone but I don't know how to get them to upload. As soon as I figure that out ill load em. Right now it's not very out of control, I'm just hoping to nip it in the bud. I'm thinking of maybe getting a sea hare and try that as well. I guess it couldn't hurt. Thanks for all your help.

As someone who's done it, several times, don't get that Sea Hare. They need a ton of Algae and can die quickly. Just a waste of a life and money. Once my parameters were right and I dosed Tech M everything started eating and killing the Bryopsis. I turned on the lights at night and saw the bristle worms eating it.

All I can say is pick a method and stick with it. I'm not truly sure what's all in the tech M but my home made mag worked just as well. Some have had great luck w blue legs, I ended up going w the nudibranches lettuce, not the sea hares. If you saw my pics you'd understand. Some have said its not exactly the mag level but some other additive in the tech M that does it since others have had no luck with the solution. I've met some that said it came out if no where and they have not added anything to their tanks in a while, others have said that it came back even after a tech M trial after 6-8 months. It's a brutal organism but very nice if its allowed to grow. Keep us posted, we've been there. My greatest advice is don't pick or pluck it.

It is that brutal. Most dont know to take action the instant you see the first tuft

The only way to surely win

Lol. For sure. I waited. Waited to long. Tank was total grown over. Pretty much ripped the tank apart to destroy this stuff.

That statement above doesnt cover repeats. You might be doing repeat work in keeping it gone

The real question is what keeps it gone, that ranges from tank to tank.

Try peroxide we wield it well against bryopsis post whole tank shot

Thanks for the advice on the sea hare. I had it in the shopping cart. Glad I checked the thread first. I have blue legs and they are eating it somewhat. Right now it's only tufts of it, Not the big masses that I had before. So maybe it is working. I'm just seeing it growing back onto my birdsnest and little bits of it popping up all over and its ticking me off. I took a whole tank shot but you really can't see it to well. I'm thinking I will keep with the tech until I run out and peroxide what I can get to. I just can't believe how tenacious this stuff is!!

The other thing I was worried about was having a Sea Hare in the tank at the same time you have a high Mg. I know it can kill snails, not sure about Sea Hares.

Good point DopeCantWin. I'm not to sure but I can say I did lose my mandarin dragonet during all this.

Here's a pic of just a small amount I had

I have had this problem for 6 months trying anything and everything.. Now getting it under control using tech m and getting the mag level to at least 1800. I have a 75 gallon tank and 30 gal ref. I have used 2 gallons of tech m but its working and will probably take at least 2 more gallons for it to be going. I know I will always use tech m for my mag now as it is easy to use and really not expense if you look on line and buy the one gallon size

Yeah, I'm not sure. It could have been my stupidity and I could have crushed him with a rock from all the movement, who knows. I was so bummed, practically hating myself for it.

Just for a thought, this does make me wonder what our Mag levels are normally? If we were to keep it on the higher side maybe we could prevent the out brake in the future, I know my corals did look fantastic and so much more colorful once I was adding. I think I will monitor the Mag level more diligently in the future.

Another update, well actually some observations with dosing tech m. The bryopsis seems to now be going away. I'm getting a few spots jumping up here and there but it is more stunted, only about maybe 1/4 - 3/8 long. I'm thinking the cuc is somewhat able to keep up on it better. My corals are all very bleached. My cabbage is almost white and my hammer and frogspawn are also mostly devoid of color. I somewhat expected that. I did have a large carpet mushroom, (at least that's what I've been told it is because I have no idea what it really is) die on me. It developed a hole right in the middle and over night the hole got bigger. I pulled it out and it stank horribly. The other one that was attached to the same rock I put in my kids tank to recover and it is doing nicely now (I dipped it in peroxide for about 5 mins first so I hope that would kill off any bryopsis). I also had a large brittle star that got very lethargic and was on deaths door. It's in the kids tank now and doing well. My live rock was loaded with little brittle stars and I have not seen nary a one now so I think they're dead, along with the tons of bristle worms I had in the tank. I'm going to continue with the mag for a while longer and I'm spot treating what I can with peroxide. I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel, I just hope it's not a train.
