Bummer, I got home tonight to find this mess
btatrashed.jpg

The wife called me around noon to tell me it climbed into the powerhead and the tank is cloudy
I'm making water now to clean up the mess but I doubt the BTA is going to make it.
I'm thinking I should just pull it out:(

Hate to be contrarian but I would leave it in a little while longer and see what happens. BTA are extremely durable if they are in good condition beforehand. If you have a stable tank and he was eating well and was well established in your tank I believe there is a decent chance that part of him will survive.

Since his insides are outsid
now, pull him out and flush him.
And cover that powerhead.
I cant seem to get everyone to realize that this is a must and have it on my web page as to how to cover them.
Some day with the mods decide that my web page is of help to others they will place it where it can be seen and keep this from happening to many people.

So discouraging to me that so many of these beautiful animals are lost to powerhead when there is an easy fix for this.

Pull it out and flush it?!? Thats not the best advice. If water quality is good, that thing has a very good chance of recovery.

Rod, with the insides hanging out like his is do you suggest he leave it in the tank?
If there is a chance it should be removed and placed in another tank that is stable if you want to see if it makes it, but don't leave it in the tank it is in to wait and see if it will survive or not.
Once the insides are exposed such as this one it is almost always fatal.
Telling him that water quality may give it a chance is no good either.
It's is like telling someone you have cancer, but if you keep your house clean you will heal.

I had a bubble that my wife thought was dead and she said take it out. It didn't look good and was turning itself inside out. Probably was the size of a quarter at that point. I left it in the tank just to be safe and see what would happen with it. 5+ years later it is the size of a basketball. You never know.

id rather give it a fighting chance rather than kill it. I have seen them recover from worse.. Exposed insides and all.

And the house cleaning analogy.. Cancer is a disease... for a better comparison/analogy.. if someone had an amputation, a clean house will surely make things heal better without the risk of infection :)

:) true, dont mind me, I am off to the doc for a CT scan this morning and my pain is showing in my posts .:(
I wish the OP well on his BTA.

agree with finding nemo, her website ROCKS. I got myself a bta and read her site the same day. I practically ran to the craft store for the needle point plastic sheet,
My bta was playing to close to the intake.

anyways, the sheet is 59 cents and you use maybe 1/6th of it. secure it with zip ties.

I'd give it a chance, but keep a close eye on it.

Mine went into the overflow and I caught it when it was 3/4 the way through the teeth. I pulled it out, and it had lost about 1/3 of its flesh. In a week in was fine, and it looked similar to yours. But it did not have its insides come out.

I also found 3 pieces, the size of a dime to quarter, in the filter sock in my sump. 2 of them are growing/eating, and one disappeared into the rock.
