Bta

I just got back from the LFS and they had the cutest little green BTAs! I really wanted one but resisted the urge. I need some help. I am planning on having the BTAs host a pair or a single perc/ ocellaris clowns. The nems only being 2 inches or so in diameter, I am afraid that one that tiny would be too small for even a tiny clown to host. Am I right? Should I keep it in a 10 gallon for 6 weeks to get it to grow, doing WC every 3 days? And feeding every 3 days? Will it grow well? Also, the QT tank has not even be set up yet, and so the tank would not have been set up long enough, is that okay?

Just wait for a bigger one to come into your store. It would be best if your bta is 2 or 3 times as big as your clown. What your trying to is probably not going to work and your going to kill the bta. Putting it in a new 10 gallon is not good.

kay, I dont kow if they carry bigger BTA. They did have a large nem called a 'pink tip nem'.
It was ight pink w/ dark pink tips. would that work? Could a BTA live under 65 watt PC light?

the pink tip is a common name for condylactus or w/e anemones- aka condys which i have been told are not clown hosting 'nems but idk if clowns will host in it- since clowns have been witnessed to host obscure objects around the tank

Anemones from the Atlantic Ocean ( condy's and some carpet nems) are not generally know for hosting clownfish because there are no clown fish in the Atlantic (or so I am told).

I also had a Clarkii host a Condy and a saddleback host an Atlantic Carpet( as in my avatar).

BTA's do need a fairly intense light system. Normally VHOs, T5s or Halides are required for their lighting needs. There are those who keep BTA's with PCs, but more like 260w PC lights. Even then the BTA will most likely position itself high to the lights.

It is possible for atlantic nems to host clowns - kind of up to the clown if they want to go in, but you have a higher chance of the host eating the hosted since this is not a normal situation for these atlantic nems.

A few questions:

You talk about letting the bta grow out a bit in a 10 gal tank, then do you plan on transfering it to the 29 gal tank? And is your lighting strong enough on that one?

Do you already have the clown fish?

My suggestion: If your 29 is a suitable habitat for the nem, and you do not yet have the clowns, let it grow out in there, and when it's big enough, then add your clowns. A word of caution though - you may find the 29 will become too small for the nem in a short amount of time - they do grow well when they are loved :)

Good luck!

no clown yet. Will drop the 10gal idea, bad lights. maybe keep it in my fuge, and hope that it does well in their, then move it to the main tank after it grows to a decent size.
