Bubble King Skimmer Club

What are the power levels on the red dragon speedy pump the increments I mean.

If I am not mistaken, 100% is approx 50 watts, 98 is 49 watts, 96 is 47 watts etc. It's been a few months since I played with the pump after getting it dialed in but I think that was how it worked. There isn't a direct correlation between max air flow and wattage/power percentage other than less water flow in turn equals less but also finer bubbles. This doesn't mean that at 75% power you have only 75% SCFH. You could still have 80%+ SCFH at 75% power so by reducing pump speed you aren't necessarily cutting air flow into the skimmer by as much as you might think. You are cutting water flow but also increasing the amount of smaller bubbles which in turn can actually raise the foam head. These adjustments allow for larger bubbles that pop at the surface and create a wetter skim vs finer bubbles that foam at the surface creating a thicker skim that can be adjusted from dry to wet via the wedge pipe. There is a balance in there at which point as you go down on the power the air flow will really start to drop off but that is beyond the range that you will find usable.. It's hard to explain other than to say that the ability to fine tune the pump like that can have a dramatic effect on how the skimmer performs and once you find your sweet spot, it really works amazingly well.

Slief, in your experience, do you like the new SM250 with the RD3 better than the old model? If so, why? I have the old and am wondering whether I should take advantage of the sale on the new model.

Before my SM250, I had an Alpha 300 with the standard Red Dragons. As such, I can't really give you an objective answer based on first hand experience. Since I do have experience with both variations of the pumps, I can at least provide a bit of thought on it. The Red Dragon 1500's on my Alpha were the ones with the adjustable volutes. Those adjustable volutes were a bit of a pain to dial in. Especially given that the Alpha had 2 pumps so that left for a lot of adjusting to get the skimmer dialed in just right. I had my hands in the water twisting those volutes quite often for the first month or two. Despite that, I found them to be great pumps and never had a single issue with them in the 3+ years that I owned that skimmer.

Having said that, the SM250 is obviously a great skimmer with or without the RD3. The original Red Dragon on yours happens to be a great pump. On the other hand, I really like the RD3. I think it has some advantages over the standard Red Dragon. It's obviously much easier to adjust and dial in which is a huge benefit as far as fine tuning. Being able to adjust the pumps flow via the controller and it's direct impact on the SCFH and bubble size may have it's advantages over the standard pump beyond just the ease of tuning but that is only speculation. It obviously looks nice too!

If your skimmer is really dialed in to your liking, I'm not sure you will see much of a benefit migrating to the SM250 with the RD3. I did see a post a couple days back from another member who did just what you are considering. He might be better qualified to answer that since he is going from an older SM250 with the Red Dragon to the newer SM250 with the RD3. If nothing else, the used SM250's hold there value very well so you should be able to sell it easily for good money assuming you thoroughly clean it up. That would certainly offset your costs on the new one and the current discount on them is a great price that will be hard to come by down the road.. Food for thought.

I wish I could give you more feedback on that. I don't think you would regret the migration but you do happen to have a great skimmer as it is.

Here is the guy who just migrated from the older SM250 to the new one.. This is one page back. I sent him a PM to see if he would chime in. I'm sure he is still in the break in period but since it's been close to a week, perhaps he can provide some objective feedback.

find 3 differences :)

Slief, thanks for the response. It's a tough call since I do love the SM250 with the red dragon and it is dialed in. I would never even have considered a change if not for the sale. I'll have to think this over a bit more...

Is it double come 250? Can I see your sump as my reference because I'm thinking to buy it?

I went with 200 on my 185g system. Tank is currently in the construction phase so the skimmer is back in its bag till I get my sump. Will post pictures when it's up and running.

Warranty Question - in the case something happens with the skimmer, do I need to fill out this warranty card that came with it? It asks for signature of the retailer/seller...since I am neither of those does that mean PA will handle all warranty issues?

PA doesn't open the boxes as far as I am aware. It wouldn't hurt to fill out the warranty card minus their signature however I don't even think that is necessary since BK doesn't support warranties anyway. JUST KIDDING!!!

Save your receipt. That should be all you need in the rare event that you have a warranty related issue. Warranty coverage should be handled directly with BK USA. They had some growing pains and issues getting the US office stocked but I think those issues are a thing of the past now or are slowly becoming so. If you do have any issues, you can contact Premium Aquatics first so they can spear head the support contact for you or you can contact BK USA directly. If it were me, I'd probably do both.

That said, BK makes quality stuff and the likelihood of you having an issue is very small. My RD3 has been perfect just as the Red Dragon 1500's were on my previous skimmer.

Can you guys recommend a BK Skimmer for a 60 SPS cube which eventually will move up to a 93G cube SPS Dominant. Sump volume is roughly 30 gallons as well. Medium bio load of 6 to 10 fish. I don't feel I would need the mini as my skimmer chamber is decent in size. I'm currently running a Vertex omega 150 and I've dealt with 2 broken impellers already.
I'm considering the Double Cone 150 or the Cone 180. I'd love to get into the RD3 speedy compared to the mini RD600 but that's the inner equipment junky wanting more than I probably need. I am willing to make an investment however I don't want more skimmer than is adequate and just overpaying for the bigger less effective model.

Hey Guys, I thought I was the only one receiving poor customer service from Royal Exclusive but since going back over previous post on this thread I see I am not alone. My motor block on my BK Mini 180 went out so I sent an email to Royal Exclusive and received and email back from Matthias Wüstefeld a couple of days later who said that they were working on a solution to my problem and it would be a big help if I could send him some photo's on the motor block, impeller and volute, which I did. Well that was two weeks ago and I still haven't received anything back from them. I have sent further emails asking for a response and still nothing. This to me is very poor customer service. I have a lot of EcoTech Marine products I use on my tank: 6 Radions and 5 MP40WES. If i have a problem with anything of these products EcoTech will ship a new part and it's on my door step in a day or two days, now that is great customer service which all high end aquarium equipment manufacturers should strive for. On the other hand, Royal Exclusiv doesn't seem to care about its consumers and doesn't have the decency to respond to emails or answer phone calls. Bubble King's are very expensive skimmers and Royal Exclusiv should have the customer service to back up the dollars that its customer have spent on their products.

Thank you. I am already in love with my skimmer. Powerful to say the least. I have it at 24w and it is producing skimmate already in 24 hours. I almost bought the DC 200 for my 120g with 40g sump and it would have been a waste. This thing is beating my tank up.
