Bubble King Skimmer Club

Plugged in a Nyos Quantum to my new tank this weekend, and the noise level is too high for my wife. (I can't blame her, it really is surprisingly loud)

Of course, she has no idea what it costs, (would probably guess 1/5 of what I gave, if not less) but has simply asked me to replace it as soon as possible. I dare not say anything

I bought this specific skimmer based on the "silent operation" hype. Needless to say I am really disappointed even though the skimmer seems to be working quite well. Still keeping my fingers crossed that it will quiet down after a few more days.

If I end up having to replace it though, I have to do it right. No more regrets; get the most silent possible right away.
In the BK range, which model would this be and what pump should I pair it with. Display tank is just over 100 gallons. Planning a sps setup with a heavy bio load (like everyone else, right? ;) ) Sump has plenty of space and constant level for the skimmer. [Max depth is 8.5 inches]

Cannot believe I am even considering replacing a less than one week old high-end skimmer :uhoh3:

So I am guessing Bubble King Double Cone 180 + RD3 Speedy would be my best bet given my criteria?

For your size tank the Double Cone 180 with the RD3 would be about perfect. It will also be silent and will run best between 18 & 23 watts depending on load and sip power.

Is Royal-Exclusiv Mini-BK 200 capable for a 220G heavy stock SPS tank? As there is a very narrow space in my sump and I think the mini BK is the only one can put in. Will it work well in this amount of water? Thanks.

Yes it is. It will handle that just fine and be VERY consistent.

Woohoo! My BK Mini came yesterday and I can see why these cost what they do. Quality is incredible and the well thought out packaging and documentation are awesome! It took a little rearranging but it fits in my sump and has been running since yesterday afternoon. This morning the foam head was spilling over into the cup and some nice green nasty in the cup!

I an waiting on my bk mini 200 as well can't wait it arrives in Monday.

It finally came in.

Anyone got any suggestions in molding the drain to a skimmate container?

What size jg? 1/4"?

I'd go as large as possible. If you can find a valve that is larger than 1/4" that would be better in terms of potential clogs. The drain hole in that thing is metric but I don't recall the size. I would take the cup to the hardware store and find pipe thread tap that will work in the hole. Then adapt it to as large as possible of a john guest valve if not a barbed fitting and then get a magnum valve union You might be able to go as large as 1/2". .

I received the skimmer yesterday; absolutely love it! I cannot remember the last time I was this happy with a new "gadget" :D
(It has made me want to replace the Vortech Vectra return pump as well :D )

One question though: You recommended 18-13W, but I can not go lower than 20 and I can not adjust to odd numbers.

So: 20-22-24-28.......50

Is it supposed to be like this?

The European controller versions are adjustable in 2w increments. Start at 18 watts. The lower flow will allow for more contact time. Let it from for a few days then play with the speed. You are aiming for the thickest foam possible. Every tank is different depending on the load but in your case, I'd expect your best performance to be no more than 24 watts and likely 18-20.
