I cant imagine what water parameters are changing after a year (or a few months for that matter unless you're new to the hobby).

I don't think its just water parameters but stability and biodiversity being established throughout. Like any ecosystem that needs to mature to be strong and resistant to negative things. i.e. a GSP coral colony that is large and can take some nipping from fish, unlike a frag. Not that I really know what I'm talking since this is my first tank and isn't a year old yet.
