Bucking the Trend With My New Skimmer

Simon, I'm curious how this works as well. I'm wondering if you will have to go up to a Blueline 55 or not.
Ken

Well we'll see. My assumption is not, given I'm not changing neck diameter so the same amount of bubbles will just be rising an extra couple of feet. Not sure that the blueline 40 isn't already maxing out the dual venturis so a bigger pump probably wouldn't do much more. But all speculation on my part that I will determine in actual practice in a day or two (new tube is sitting in the back of my car but I'm committed to taking my boys to Dorney Park tomorrow). Yee hah!

I do not think the Blueline 40 is maxing out the one venturi. I currently am running the HD40 on the one of those venturis and I think I am getting finer bubbles.

So here is the extended body tube ....

I think if I put a small riser platform on the floor, the new body tube will reach slightly above the rim of my main sump - which will be perfect. Need to mix up some NSW and go and get a couple of PVC fittings, then do the swap tomorrow night.

Very cool looking Ken , kep up with the experiment my friend !

Initial Reactions

Well, my initial reaction is that this longer body is going to improve performance significantly.

Blueline 40 also appears that it will be more than sufficient (I had suspected it would) as I'm getting a dense cloud of micro-bubbles all the way up the 48" body tube. Curiously, I have to have the gate valve more open than before - not sure why, will have to ponder that one. Incidentally i have about one inch between the top of the swabbie motor and the pipes in my basement. Glad I didn't have MTC make me a 5 foot tube

Anyhow, will check back in once the skimmer has started to form a full foam head.

Wow. That's a monster.

Gee, 48" isn't too big. I was hoping when I went to 24" for the main tube that it wouldn't be too big.

That's interesting about the gate valve. If anything I would have thought maybe you would have had to close it down more. I would think there is more head pressure and a slower flow rate into the skimmer. This would be akin to closing a ball valve for the flow into the skimmer. A slower rate in would mean a slower rate back out and therefore close the gate valve more. I think.

I was of a similar mind. Perhaps once the skimmer settles in I will find it necessary to close down the gate a bit. Nice thing about having the 'machinery' in the basement is being able to experiment with stuff like this.

Not sure it's yet pulling gunk better than when it was a shortie .....

..... but I think I still need to play around a bit with the internal water levels.

Over time the taller reaction chamber will benefit over the shorty for stinckier skimmate as the dwell time has increased quite a bit...just my 3 cents worth of experience LOL!
Might even try a shorter neck lets say 9" or 10"inches as opposed to the standard 13" tall neck...

Noticeable, eh? Well, skimmate is darker and smells even worse than before. Volume about the same. No subjective difference to the animals in my tank .... Not yet, at least. I realize that I have to be very careful not to thump it with my shoulder. May design a support so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

It's kind of hard to tell. When the recirculating pump is off, water level is about 6 inches below where the body transitions to the neck. Once the recirculating pump is on, the water level rises to just below the neck.

Simon, was the water level set at the same place without the recirculating skimmer on when you had the 22" body as well?
