Build Thread - Elos 160

So nice... I seen a similar Elos tank at a fellow members in miami. It was incredible how nice those tanks are.

Jonny how did his plumbing look?
I wish i could just remove that center brace but I am sure its design requires it to bear the weight.
Any criticism on my plumbing anyone?

Ok I will get this!

Don't think the Ring on the sock are going to sit flush enough for the water to just fall in, instead is going to bypass and just splash into the next chamber, the water splashing noise will get old really fast. Can you make another sock holder underneath the holes?

Take a look at the finished sump pic, i added another sheet with larger holes so the socks would sit flush. I will also add a small lip at the end to keep the water from simply flowing off but allow it to pass if socks get clogged.

The plumbing was very clean. The center brace is a must. I believe there was holes for plumbing through the center divider. He has a build thread you should take a look at it .

I think he's asking if you know who's tank or where the thread is :)

If this looks like. Poor design please let me know so I can rethink.

Thanks

Viola!!!- I can finally see pics.

I see 2 concerns with your sump design, and they are just my opinion.

1- Your frag tank return does not go through any mechanical filtration. Frag tanks produce a lot of crud, keep that in mind. You have it all going back to your display tank.

2- i couldnt find any info on the size of the sump. Is that sump big enough for a 160G?, It looks small, maybe its the pic. Will it accept water coming back from tank if a power failure? :o

160 is the length in cm its prob around 130gals. The sump is 27x16x16 i dont know yet how much it drains when pump shuts down. I could build a sump perhaps 2 or 3 inches wider and 1 or 2 inches longer but would have to be custom built.

I did not think that a small frag tank would create much waste, i just wanted to increase water capacity while keeping my small frags and possibly creating a habitat for pods. If i filter the water from this small tank wont I eliminate the chance to feed pods to display?

Why do frag tanks produce any more crud than a regular tank?

They actually do create waste. Tony Vargas has a small tank with just coral and its crazy the amount of crap accumulates. As someone mentioned a circulation pump would help solve that.

But to what Eddie said, you technically now have "dirty" water being fed directly to the display. I think ideally, you'd want to process that water first.

I think the question is how big of an issue would this setup be in terms of water quality from the frag tank vs if that water drained ahead of skimmer.

Rovster- I didnt say it was more than a DT :hmm5: :spin3:

But from personal experience I can tell you they produce a lot of crud. I had a frag tank (~20gals) hooked up to my main tank and one of the many reasons i got rid of it was because I coudnt keep it clean. It required weekly siphoning, AND i had 2 koralias in there stirring it up. Could it be that a bare bottom made it look like a lot?, maybe.

Funny you mention the bare bottom thing. When I do my weekly water changes on my ghetto tank, I siphon out a lot of crud. Maybe the bare bottom has something to do with it? Also, if keeping fish and snails in there, there is your source of crud. Leave fish out, and corals don't produce crud. You could also add a sock to pre filter any crud that would wind up there. Just helping my rimless fellow reefer with solutions, LOL!

Zero fish in my frag tank Rovster. Snails and corals only. Mainly SPS. The overflow of the frag tank emptied into same place as main DT so frag tank water passed through mechanical, skimmer, and chemical filtration. You'd be surprised how much crap corals produced.

BTW- the solution is simple. Run the fuge/frag tank output to the overflow area... before mechanical, and skimmer filtration.
