building a 500 gallon plywood tank

I just put a few screws in mine. It doesnt take that much to hold the top on and hold it from spreading. Mine is 8ftx30x28 and when I did the test fill I only had 2 or three screws holding the top. WHen people build plywood tanks they go way overboard IMO. Your tank will be fine. I wouldnt be surprised if you could get away with going braceless on the top

Tanks looks sweet! Ive never seen a red tank. I'm tagging along.
As for your question, If it was me I'd probably would glue and screw it down. Why take any risks at this point? I'm not sure if I missed it earlier in this thread, what kind of glue (brand) are you using to glue all the wood together with? Titebond, Gorilla Glue, Elmer's?

i used liquid nails , but i would say any kind would do , some use water proff stuff , but i didnt see that it matter cause water should never hit the glue , what i used it said good for inside and out side use for all kind of wood ...

a wooden tank under this kind of load and stress/ pressure will certainly fatigue over time...at what point does the fatigue overcome the structural integrity i have no idea, however i would not care to find out either, hence over building wooden tanks is a good idea...

as for the top of the tank...i would just use RTV100 series silicone and bunch of screws to hold the top on...should the need ever come to remove the top it would be as simple as a screw driver (LOL most likely a drill though) and piano wire, and not harm your tank in the least...if you glue it and need to remove the top well you are breaking out the chisels and hammers....or a reciprocating saw...hopefully you made the top large enough to be screwed into the 2x4's surrounding the top of the tank...

yeah i made the bottom of the tank and top of the tank so that it screws into the 2x4s for that reason , its all tied together , thats what im thinking , if i glue it the top down , i can never take it off , i should never need to take it off again , im thinking it would be better for down the road if the whole tank is glued and screwed together ,, humm humm , guess this is one where its each for their own ,,,, forgot , thanks for your reply

well its been few weeks since i got to play with my tank , i drilled my holes in my stand bigger for my bulk heads , the nut goes under the tank now , its been filled over a week now , no leaks , i been playing with my filter system now , im going to use a 55 gallon tank for that with socks

been haven a problem with my filter system , was just too loud , making a gulping sound , so I ask for help , and im going with what everyone told me to do , 1 pipe shorter and at full siphon with a valve that's tune to my pumps and other 2 overflows little taller ,,,, I added a valve right under the bulk head and then pipe it off to my filter tank and started to run my system , it was siphon way too fast at first so was turning the valve slowly and I guess the stress of the valve and elbow right under the bulk head was too much , the bulk head started slowly leaking , drip here and there , so I get my plyers out and tighten my bulk head nut down some , didn't get much more then 1/2 a turn , and the nut stripped out and came very loose and had water starting spraying me in the face , I played with the nut and gotten it kinda cross thread to hold it tempory , after about 1 full min it was back to leaking a drip here and there , got my pump out and started draing my tank , which take about 30 min , which when your 500 gallon tank is leaking from the bottom hole , not fast enough , tank drain and clean up my water , im going have to cut my pipe off and install new bulk head and replum it again , have to say my friday night really suck , very frusted , anyway , on a good thought , was working silent , couldn't hear it run at all ,very happy ,till I about made a slip and slide in my house , anyway waiting on bulk heads , I order the regular schedule 40 ,, but thinking im going to get the schedule 80 bulk head , little stronger now , till then

Thats crazy. Literally. Why not just build it 4 side glass? id never trust a sheet of 3/4" to 5000lbs of pressure.

i didnt build it with 4 sheet of glass for money , if i could afford it , i would of , but like my tank , its in the corner , can only really see it from the 2 sides

i been trying to load pic , but i must change somthing , every thing i load , pics are huge , does anyone know what i can try? , i sent e mail to rc for help
