Am starting to plan out a sump/refuge to go under my 125g and was wondering if anyone has a 30 gallon long tank they would like to trade or sell? Thanks and I'll be bugging everyone soon about the sump design :) can contact me here or email me at jamez041279@yahoo.com

wow, nice selection and prices, still thinking of a DIY approach as I like to do things on my own :) the 40 long glass tank is quite attractive

Jfolley67 recently built her own sump (with help from Angela). She purchased an acrylic tank from glass cages, and glued the baffles herself, I think. Not sure where she got the baffles. You might try sending her or Angela Short a PM.

Personally, I just built a 20 tall sump to go under my 45.

First off, I would say go as large as you can, so if you can fit the 40, go for it! :)

Secondly, I bought my display tank and sump at the same from glass cages and then I measured (although I got it a little short, it still works) and had a local glass shop do my baffles. I did a glass overflow and got all of my baffles for like $30. Not bad at all!

Here is a bunch of good sump info:

I prefer a simple sump where the water flows from one end to the other. Here is the sump on my last tank made out of a 30L:

Here is the sump on my current tank I made out of an acrylic 50 tall I bought from Glass Cages:

Thanks Chris, those are great pics and what I'm looking to do. Do you have anymore of the 30L you built? I don't think the 50 would fit under my 125G

No I don't have any that show the baffles any better than that one. It's basically just 3 baffles and then the single baffle with teeth cut out (those aren't really necessary). I did put a bubble box in the corner in the 30L similar to the one that stretches all the way across in the acrylic one.

meintn- When fishdoc moved he sold his tank and sump to me, so I've got it right now. Unfortunately, because it's pretty snug under the tank I don't think I'd really be able to get a better picture than the one he posted. As he said, the only thing not in the picture is a bubble trap. This is just a small square compartment in the corner with holes in it at the bottom and a lid on top (with a hole just big enough for the return pipe in it). Fishdoc also made an alternate lid in which a filter sock sits nicely. This is nice for blowing out the rocks during a water change and catching most of the gunk. The bubble trap is pretty simple, but it prevents salt creep from becoming a problem with the water coming from the return and/or due to microbubbles popping on the surface of the sump (I literally have almost none and this tanks been running for a little over a year now).

duely noted DMBillies. Right now I am deciding in a 40G long (36 x 18 x 13 Tall) will fit under the tank to have more volume/space to work with. I will go with a simple design with sump/fuge/return all in line like you have I believe and then it will be time to upgrade the skimmer.

Thanks for the link Fishdoc as there is a great deal of information on that site. I will keep everyone updated :)
