Building a Tank for Haddoni

Hey guys,

I'm so fascinated by Haddoni anemones that I am thinking about building a tank specifically to host about 3 or 4 of them with a pair of clownfish and thats about it...maybe a few corals as well. I want to build something that they will thrive in. I currently have one in my 125 gallon reef, but i feel it is not to happy there. Can i get some direction to what type of tank would be good for this? Size? water volume? lighting? etc...I don't want to break the bank here but the minimum for starters..
 
Whatever the size. I do suggest 4-6" of sand. I would think that a 75 would fit 3 maybe 4. Or a 110dd would be more than enough. With 2 metal halides a couple 250w or even acouple 150w would be good. And no need for anything more than a couple koralias for flow. It would be a cheap setup and it would be great for haddoni:)
 
Assuming you have four full grown anemones with space in between, you'll ideally want a tank that's 8 feet by 3 feet (so each nem won't touch the sides of the tank). Given that a tank that large isn't practical for most people, I would go with the widest tank (front to back) you can find. This way the haddoni has space to grow. Since most standard tanks are 24" wide, you can try look for either a custom tank or something like a Marineland Deep Dimension tank which is 36" wide.

In terms of lighting, they're not light hungry so almost any light will do, provided it's ample to grow soft coral. They don't like a lot of flow either, but do need water movement, so I'd suggest something like a Wavebox which can create a nice wave without too much direct flow. The wave shouldn't be so strong that it lifts up the oral disc.

Since haddoni are sand dwellers, you'll want at least 4" of sand so they can did into it, but in terms of rocks/decor you don't need much else, assuming you've got a skimmer and other filtration and aren't relying on the live rock in the tank.

Sounds like a cool project. Definitely start a build thread once you get things going.
 
Ok so definitely a wide tank...widest i can find and deep sand bed of course, i'll go with 6 inches. Any particular sand type recommended for these guys?

I've got a 20Long thats not being used right now, could i use that for a sump or is bigger recommended?
 
My new tank, thats being built, is going to be 4'x4' for my haddoni and gigs. So I agree as deep as you can go really:)

My haddoni have liked the black Tahitian moon sand on top and fine oolite sand underneath.

I don't want to derail this thread, but please start a build thread when you get your tank. It's exactly the size tank I want!
 
My tank is 48"x30wide x 20 tall. I have maxspect razors160's. 2 mp 40's with batter backup, you could go with 10's as the 40's are a bit overkill, but I like being able to run them at their lowest speed. This should make them last quite a while. 4 to 6 inch sand bed. very little rock. Clownfish:)

They really seem to like the leds and while you would need 2 of them, the cost in bulb replacement and the lack of heat and being able to change your color spectrum when you want, make them a great piece of equipment in my oppinion and they look great.

SRO3000 skimmer, these guys seem to put out a lot of waste. TLF150 reactor. 90gal sump. ehiem return pump. Magic marine dual doser, tunze ATO. And a steel stand. I will never use a wood stand again.

In my oppinion any thing less than 30 wide, does not do them justice. A shallow 3x3 cube would also be great.

My next nem all gigs tank, will be 72x30x20 some where down the road :)

Look at the forsale forums and craigslist. someone is alway moving up or out of the hobby.

I was at my local LFS today and he had a real nice red haddoni. I so much wanted to get him but stopped myself because i know i just dont have the room for him right now...oh well...poor guy also, he was in a bare bottom tank with 3 other BTA's.
 
Here is a pic of him that the store took. How do you guys think he looks? I'm still wondering if I could make this work...

 
Looks good to me. Just acclimation stress. Actually it looks horrrrrible. Whats the # to that place so I can... Complain yeah that's it complain. Btw do they ship:) lol. I can't believe it's just in your lfs.

hey guys, sorry i just coulnd't resist plus i felt like he needed to be in a better place. The red haddoni is now in my tank. Doing good, he's a little guy though...definitely less than 6". Here's a pic a few minutes after putting him in.

 
Oh yeah i did, he sunk right in and is looking real good right now. If I could only get my green one to settle now...he decided to detach again, i think some crabs were bothering his foot. Now he's up against the glass, spread out huge..and his foot is resting right on the sand and against the glass in a corner. He's stayed there now for almost 7 hours now, mouth tighly closed and seems ok. Can they actually keep their foot above the sand and be ok?
 
That is a very nice pickup you got there.

Can we get a FTS?

I would love to see the flow you have it in.
