Hey, first person who's complimented me on my "speediness." :)

I think it's great your thinking this all the way through I guess is what I meant. It seems your thinking each step through. not trying to rush things which you see so often and asking questions at each turn.
True inspiration, can't wait to see it come along.

argh! you are 12 days past saying that you would post pictures :D. we would all love to see your new additions. also, maybe you can give us a fts and we can try to find them. i bet the tang looks like a penny in the pic :D.

Yeah, I just jumped on this thread...Great achievement in getting that monster up a running! Now I'm dying to see some fish swimming in that thing!

Hey all! Enough whining. I brought pictures. :)

I had to travel all week last week and so I didn't get to as much stuff as I'd hoped by then. (If this seems like a recurring theme then you've been reading this thead!)

We added 20 blue-green chromis last Saturday and one yellow tang. Kathy talked me into it; I was more inclined to hold off and let things stabilize again. However, it was inexpensive and I felt the water quality was good enough to just dump her straight in. Whether that's the case remains to be seen.

Anyway, one chromis died in transit. We've since lost four more, as some of you predicted. I did, however, read the threads... and mass die-off sounds like it's about fifty-fifty. I'm somewhat convinced now that FEEDING can help reduce it just by watching them get antsy if they haven't gotten food in a while. I guess that remains to be seen. I'll keep a running countdown.

Kathy doesn't like the "boring blue fish," but I think they are cool. Poor Tabitha, as the tang has been named, has had a rougher time of settling in. She still "stress-jerks" whenever we get close to the tank, so I've taken to either watching from a distance, hiding on the stairs (behind the rail), or planning to sit very still and let her chill out for a while each time I come close. To say nothing of the lights shocking her, the tank maintenance I've had to keep doing, etc.

The good news is that I think she is coming around. I see less of the stressed jerking around and she is eating now, which is great. She mostly eats the hair algae, which you'll see I have plenty of in the pictures below! It is going to take more than Tabitha to consume all the algae in this tank, I fear. She also has red fins, which she obtained a couple days into her life in Bertha. We read that this can be caused by almost any stressor or illness, and also that it's likely she'll recover on her own if the tank conditions are good. Chemically, everything still looks great... nothing but a single ppm of nitrates at this point. I hope she will pull through. If it gets really bad or I notice any fin damage, I will have to try to trap her and properly QT. (The rest of my fish will be QTed and medicated as needed, but I took an intentional shortcut with this one!)

The tank itself needs an auto-top-off, which I'm slowly in the process of building. I got my solenoids from McMaster last week while I was gone, so I just need to do some plumbing and then wire it all up. Once Aquatronica helps me figure out what's wrong with my controller, I think it'll be good to go.

I'm also eager to get the fuge online. It needs plumbing as well, but is full of RODI and ready to go other than sand and salt otherwise. I would like to algae growing in there instead of in the main sooner rather than later!

That's about it for now. Let me know your thoughts and opinions, as I know you will! Oh -- pics:

Here's a semi-good shot of the "room view:"

End-on view. Very hard to shoot without a wider lens since the stairs are right next to it. I'll be shooting better FTSes with a tripod and the correct lenses "real soon now." Also note the ugly Tunze right in the view. I can't figure out how to get good flow on this end with the Tunzes all on the far wall yet... probably either need more Tunzes or a better arrangement with slower, alternating flow. Also note the blowing bare patches of sand on the bottom. I really have to get those things pointed right, but I'm lazy. :) Also note the algae on the sand. It comes and goes with the light cycle at this point.

Last one for now...

Tabitha doesn't look to bad to me. Tank looks great and I love the rock work.

Jonathan,

I'm glad to hear you say that! I've never had one before, so I'm just going on daily observation. The picture may not do justice to the redness, but it's certainly there... though it may be fading slightly even in the last day or so. If you look at the close-up of Tabby, you can see the red best in the pectoral fin that's somewhat out-of-focus in the foreground. I know her fins weren't red when we got her, so I've just assumed they picked that up as a result of stress/sickness.

Otherwise she looks pretty structurally healthy to my untrained eyes. I hope she'll pick up the pace with the algae-eating over the next week and then I'll feel pretty comfy with her status. (I dread having to trap her and scoop her out!)

she'll be alright. One thing you can do is in an area she likes to hang out in, toss in a rock with nori rubber-banded to the top. That usually evokes a strong feeding response. Soak the nori in Selcon or other vitamins and that will give her enough of a boost that she will spend the day grazing on HA.

dude that tank looks amazing ,
how about a few other tangs
a sohol tang
achilles tang
powder brown
clown tang
lavender tang

now that wold be great to see the algae wouldnt last then

Bertha looks awesome with a little life in there!

FWIW - For the sand bare spots, I put the thinnest flat rocks on the glass bottom at points where the Tunzes and VorTech just had to blow sand no matter how I set them. Adding one piece will change the flow so you'll have to add a piece, see what that does, then add more until you can hold sand. This worked in my 120. Now they look like buried rocks in the sand.

I tried some nori on the first day and she didn't seem interested, but I'm going to try a fresh piece today at your suggestion. I'm glad to hear you think she'll be fine.

Thanks, this is a great suggestion. I'm concerned about the general process I'll have to go through each time I vacuum up sand and put down fresh, but maybe if I can get some big, smooth rocks out of the river I can achieve sand blowing nirvana. :)

you know Ben, it may be better to introduce all tangs at the same time. just a thought.

Oooh, and a controversial one at that. Did you do this? I assume it worked out favorably for you, if so?

Ben

Tabitha will be fine, in no time at all she'll be swimming up to the glass to greet you like a dog, fins a swayin, happy to see you and get some food!

The tank looks like its coming along beautifully, once again I wish I was that far along. As per your request, yes I do have a thread running. I think you can get to it by clicking that little red house. And input would be great.

Tanks looking great... enjoy

yeah, I introduced all tangs at one time and it worked out well except that I had one kole DOA leaving just two. One pummeled the other one to within an inch of its life. I scooped it out and gave it to another reefer. Since then I have tried introducing two nasos on different occassions and both have perished within a week. All the rest get along just fine and I attribute that to none having a territory ahead of the others.

I have a sailfin, orange shoulder, purple, 2 yellows, striped bristletooth, yellow eye kole, and 3 heps.
