Buildup of a 90 gallon Reef (picture intensive)

Both of you have been to my house, do you think a tank this size would be overpowering in the room it's in?

I honestly don't think so. The extra 6" will mean more for the tank than the room and will give you many more options in your aquascaping.

"Overpowering in the room" is reefcrazed Peter's 525g that takes up most of his living room. But even that is "overpowering" in a good way!

Your room is definitely big enough and the tank is a nice focal point. You would go from a beautiful 29g to a beautiful 90g to a beautiful "???g". I think a 150g long (60x24x24) or 180g would be a good size for that room. Can I start spending your money on equipment now too? :D

Bring it on Greg! :)

I'm thinking a pair of tunze 6100's with a controller as well as another MH. Longer VHO's and a bigger heater are all I really need to get the thing going.

Yup... I think if you stay in the 150-180g range, you won't have too much of an equipment expense. Like you said, one more MH pendant a couple tunze's and another heater would get you by. Longer VHOs and a controller would be bonuses.

A couple holes in the wall and you can start migrating equipment to the garage like the big boys! Shall I bring my tools yet?

What program are you referring to?

Not sure if you ever noticed or not but when you download a movie I host it takes you to a screen where you have to click download. I can limit the amount of downloads for each video. Here is what I mean. here is a video of mine, I have blocked downloads on.
http://www.ajpsreef.com/downloadcontrol/dc.php?dcid=21544239
You can view the page but if you try to download it wont let you. I can reactivate the video with the "flip of a switch" I can also limit it to say 100 total downloads, or maybe 5 downloads per day.

Yeah, I'll be lucky if my wife lets me put the topoff in the closet behind the tank!

Oh now you're killing me JR! I'm never going to get a 240 in there!

I'm hoping to get a 24" deep one. Jennifer likes the look of more sandbed anyway. The only problem being, I will have to have it closer to the wall.

Both of you have been to my house, do you think a tank this size would be overpowering in the room it's in?
i think a 180 would be ideal for your room. since it's pretty much 3 rooms all open together, it wouldn't be overpowering at all. my father in law has a 125 in a space smaller than your area and it looks good, although boarderline a little small. a 180 would have looked better. ;)

i actually don't think it's overpowering at all since it's all pretty much open to the foyer and the main living room. where his tank is located i would consider more of a dining room. i like how he has a special seating area just for the tank. a tank like that you can stare at for several hours and never watch the same thing twice! :D

I may go with that then. I'm still considering that 225 as well. It is the same footprint of the 180, just a few inches taller.

If he was in town I'd just drive and see it but he is a few hours away in Cary.

i will never buy a tank taller than 24". too much of a pain to maintain. 24" with a 24" base will be even worse than a 24" with an 18" base (your current 90) reaching those back corners will be a pain for placements/retreivals if you go any taller.

Yup a 225 would normally be 31" high in a 180 footprint. When I was considering new tanks, most people warned against that for a reef due to reuduced light penetration as well as maintenance as J.R. pointed out.

J.R. - good points on Peter's tank, but I think it pretty much IS the room it's in (other than the couch across from it! ;) It is such a gorgeous tank that it is a real showpiece there. I could stare at 1 square foot of that tank for hours. It is overwhelming.

Greg

Oh my goodness, just get the 240! :D
Then I can dream about having one and would be able to look at yours and drool for hours and hours. The way I do with Weatherson`s LOL. Then be able to show the wife and say,"see this is what we could have! ;)"
*One of our LFS has had one for sale for about a year now, not set up, just sitting there*

I have wanted a 240 or 300 for quite some time to house large angelfish and tangs in. I just don`t have the room for an 8ft tank

:beachbum:

Update...

I bought a pair of Tunze 6000's, a 7095 Controller and the magnet mounts. A pleasant side effect of this system is that my temp went down a degree. When I had both SEIO's in the tank it stayed steady at 83, I removed one SEIO and the temp dropped to 81. I removed the last SEIO and installed both Tunze's and the temp DROPPED to 79. I would have never thought that would happen as the SEIO's are rather efficient.

If I need more flow in a 180 I can easily upgrade the 6000's to 6100's.

I may start to build the stand and canopy soon for it and then save up for another metal halide fixture. I'm not sure if I will need rock or not. I'm thinking I probably will need some...

I agree with JR on the tank size. Going deeper than 24" is a real pita. My old 300 g was 31" deep and one of the main reasons why I never fully set it up was just too deep. Now I'm about 6 ft and for me to get my arms down to the bottom it was a little difficult. Not to mention you should really use 400 W MH on a tank that deep but you could get by with 250's......to be honest if I ever get around to setting up another tank its going to be much smaller than anything I have ever had. I always did like the 40 breeder.

BTW I cant believe this thread is still going.....

Hey Mike!

It's been going for a while huh? :)

I have settled on getting a 180. I'm planning the stand and plumbing now but I'm not going to bore everyone with the paint drawings like last time until I get to a final version.

Bore us? Ha! We're reefers.. :) We love the planning stage, besides you might get the final version worked out.. Posted then someone finds something you overlooked and you'd have to repost anyway.

Are the standard dimensions of a 225G 31"h x 24"w? If that's the case I'll have to order my 225G custom. I want it 30"w x 24"h
I suppose if it's custom I could also get starfire glass :)
