Buildup of a 90 gallon Reef (picture intensive)

Here is a cool picture of my electric blue hermit crab walking on my scoly.

This crab has been with me for over two years now. He keeps getting himself stuck in various corals. The last time he was stuck in a monti cap for a few days and actually abandoned his shell. He hid in a hole in the rock for a day then went back to the same shell. I was able to get him unstuck. Before that he got himself stuck in a hole in some LR and was there over a week. I was unable to get his shell out so I let him go at it. A few days later I saw his skeleton and thought for sure he was dead. Then a few days later he had the shell out and was walking around. I was relieved to see he had just molted.

Thanks cecilturtle!

I'm happy with the korallin right now. I hope it can handle the larger tank, I may have PH issues though with it only being a single chamber. I am thinking about putting an MRC on my want list. Shouldn't be too much money as I can sell this one and recoup some of the loss.

I picked up a pair of tunze drivers to turn my 6000's into 6100's. Good lord the flow difference is stunning! I only changed over one of them and it's crazy.

A shot of the kalk reactor that countertopguy made for me:

And a shot of a dosing pump I am going to try to implement sitting next to a quarter.

So ryan you care to explain that thing to me, I may be attempting to make one.

Are you referring to the kalk reactor?

What else you gonna put in the 29 ryan?

I would like to put a purple firefish in there. Beyond that I am not sure. I will probably eventually start putting corals in there again but I am trying to avoid that.

I might make it a quasi QT tank as well, I haven't decided yet.

countertopguy used countertop material to seal the bottom and top. You add RO/DI water and kalk. As your topoff pump runs it pushes the water in to the reactor which pushes water out since it has nowhere to go.

This will supply a more concentrated form of kalk to a tank during topoff.

There is a mag2 setup on the bottom for recirculation that will be set on a timer to run a few times a day for a few minutes to keep the solution well mixed inside.

I think countertopguy made a thread somewhere illustrating how he made it but I'm not sure where that was.

assuming you're talking about a goby here, you might want to research them more if you haven't. from people that i've known to have them, they're difficult and don't live long. Anthony had one and it only made it about 6 months. when i worked at fins, just about everyone that bought one and i remembered to ask them later said they didn't live long.

the 90's looking great! so what's the scoop on the 180? going to take 5 years to set up like the 90 did?

j/k man. reactor looks nice too. i recently built a display case for Anthony's diecast and am getting ready to build one for my father in law. so i'm keeping the acrylic skills sharp in case i need them again someday!

Thrl,
I am really glad I found this thread! I am in the middle of setting up my 90-gallon, and I will transferring in the contents of my 10 gallon reef. You really have a beautiful tank, and I am sure the 180 is going to follow suit. I had a question regarding your substrate. What sort did you use on this tank? Also, do you have any gobbies to clean it? I have crushed coral, which really has a nice look, but I am wondering if I should remove some and replace it with aragonite. Any help on this would be appreciated. Again, this is a great tank!

Thanks McGinnis!

I used some of that caribsea aragonite that is like 1mm or 2mm in size. Not southdown sized but a little bigger. I do have a sand sifting goby that does a lot of sand reorganization.

Electric130, that's unfortunate to hear. :(

What type of fish do you think would be good?

i will say it was in his earlier days of reef keeping (under 2 years), so it could have been an experience issue. and half the people that buy at fins don't know the difference between a firefish goby and a clownfish! so i would hold that against the purple firefish.;) i know it's bad to say it, but they're not all that expensive, so maybe give it a try. if it was me, i'd get 4 small royal grammas and put them in all at once. i loved it when i had my school of grammas. the colors were awesome!
