Yes, I am shooting for this tuesday as the start of the week for ordering.

comments that cczarnik make on another BRS thread that I thought were useful and wanted to make sure others prior to ordering -

"I have some of the ROX, the pellets are tiny. the 0.8 stands for the size of the extrusion (0.8 mm I think). Imagine little pcs of mechanical pencil lead. The std lignite carbon they sell is good stuff too, the "large" size is about the consistency of kitty litter. I believe their std carbon has a higher molasses number relative to the Iodine #. In English, this means their cheaper carbon is better at decoloring and removing the larg(ish) organic molecules than their premium ROX product. Rox, has a higher iodine #, which means it has more small pores relative to large pores. Thus ROX is more effective at adsorbing simpler, smaller compounds. For aquarium applications, we're generally more interested in carbons with high molasses numbers and decoloring efficiency than iodine numbers. Everything they sell is steam activated and washed with phosphate free acids, and you really can't go wrong. However, I'd probably give the edge to their standard product. It's as good (or better) than anything else generally available that I've seen.

As far as GFO, their regular granular GFO is the industry standard, It appears to be the same stuff in phosban/etc. There are only one or two mfg's in the world that make this stuff, AFAIK bulk reef is the only vendor to bring the high capacity to the aquarium market. Regular GFO has a fairly long lifespan in the average tank, I don't know what add'l value the high capacity would bring."

If I missed anybody let me know.
I want to say thanks to everyone who sent in their information. I’ve received plenty of thank-you's form folks but haven’t been responding individually so I also want to say a blanket you’re welcome.

I will add a little more to my note that Luckyfish pasted above (glad you shared BTW!).. ROX is pitched by the manufacturer to be used in decoloring sugar syrup. It does have a very high Iodine # (1100+), and a very good methylene blue adsorption # (large #'s of medium pores).

These high numbers come at the expense of high molasses #'s. A carbon can only have so many pores, and if it's heavy on micropores, it will probably be light on macropores. Which is probably why the carbon does not have a molasses rating.

The specific chemistry of all of this is far beyond my expertise, although what I've read is that we're more interested in adsorbing large, complex organic molecules in our systems. Worst case is that a high iodine-rated carbon could strip the elemental trace elements from our tanks (Iodine is a relevant example here). I think this is why some of the carbon mfg's recommend only running carbon briefly (Kent products I believe).

I wanted to throw a little more detail out there, as I've gone on record recommending against a premium product. I guess ideally a system would run both macro and micro carbon and supplement with trace as necessary. Hope this helps.

I'm sending the list to them in the morning. Andrew at BRS will send out an email to each of us confirming that our account has been updated. Then we will have a week to make our individual orders. So, to get the max discount wait until you hear from BRS via your personal email address.

Anybody been reading up on the two-part dow Bromide issue? Do we know what BFS is selling these days? Is it the old dow flake?

I've been reading up on it and so far it is considered a non-issue, particularly with water changes although there are ongoing experiments without WCs.

I personally do not have a problem using, and plan on using, the new stuff. Seems to work fine so far. There have been 0 (repeat, ZERO) known issues with the new mixture, although this may change in time.

I am curious what BRS is selling, too. Its really expensive compared to DOW, though. :)

I have a ? on the carbon if you pack a reactor with both types will you get the best of both? With the size of water volume that I have I don't run carbon much anymore.

Are we submitted yet? :-)

Maybe the moderators can split out the carbon thread to a new threade as there is good info there.
