Bulkhead mounting questions.

Does the rubber washer install
on the inside of the tank?

Would it be ok to run some silicone around the threaded portion of the bulkhead prior to installing?

Yes the rubber part goes on the water side of the tank. You really dont need any silicone on it when installing it

How do you know when it is tight enough? I saw in the tank drilling threads not to tighten too much or you run the risk of cracking the glass.

WRONG. The rubber gasket always goes on the flange side of the bulkhead, regardless if its inside or outside the water. Never ever install the gasket on the threaded nut side of the bulkhead.
Bulkheads should be installed clean and dry, no lubricants or sealants should be used nor are they needed. Never support any piping or pumps with the bulkhead, always support any weight to relieve stress on the gasket and sealing surfaces. Teflon dope or tape is fine on the internal threaded PVC screw fittings but is not necessary on the sealing nut. Tighten the nut hand tight and maybe another 1/4 turn, do not overtighten as this is a common mistake that leads to leaks.

Well
AZDesertRat in my reply I kind of meant that was given as the flange in my opinion is usually in the water on the inside of the tank. So in my reply YES it is on the water side :)

I forgot that once in awhile it may be mounted the other way by someone

Bulkheads are often installed with the flange on the outside especially if you need extra room like putting a sump and refugium right next to each other. Its just easiest to remember the gasket always goes on the flage side.

Not when you grow up around racing sailboats/power boats. Better have the flange and gasket on the water side and the bulky body of it with threads on the inside of the hull LOL.More hull drag with things sticking out all over.Thats why I always do it that way in the tanks and always thought of it placed that way even in fish tanks...

Like you said it can be mounted both ways with these tanks so I learned something new again:D
