bummed out

After arriving home from our diving vacation we thought that we had escaped any of the tornado damage,,,but unfortunately, the fish in the 240 must have been stressed by low temps or something (power was off for somewhere between 2-8 hrs, can't find out for sure) and they all have ich. Lost so far: Emporer Angel, Tuskfish. Still in Quarantine: Sailfin Tang, Lawnmower and Foxface. No place to Q the huge Naso tang so he is still in the tank. Am doing water changes and fish in Q are being treated wtih copper. This is the worst we have ever faced and we may end up with zero fish in the 240 when it's all over. Power was out between when caretaker was here Sun PM and when she returned Mon. AM--no one here to fire up the generator, even tho we do have one. Will keep you all posted......but it does not look good. Fish in other tanks showing no symptoms, that's the only good news I have. Cathy

aerate, aerate, aerate. DO is probably pretty low. Keeps lights off as well to aid in stress.

Thanks, Shawn. Lights are off. We have a magnum HOT on the tank. Am doing 50% water changes daily and testing for effective levels of copper. In the big tank, tomorrow I'm doing a 30% water change, and plan to raise the temp. Have not put anyone in hyposalinity ==yet. Had not considered lights off in big tank--may do that tomorrow. Just hope we can save some fish out of this...thanks for the support.

Carbon, magnum with micron filter run multiple times, diatom if you've got it. Everyone's nightmare, for sure. So sorry to hear it.

tornado damage

That's terrible! Was there damage in the area?

Anthony, the tornado went about 6 miles north of us, and then veered up hwy 60 in Marionville. If you come down 60 when you visit, you will see the damage beside the road on the trees. We were lucky it missed us, but the damage is done anyway.

Update on Ich Survivors

Update on Ich Survivors

Well, we finally bit the bullet. After doing some heavy reading, I realized that we really had to get all of the fish out of the 240 to be successful at ridding it of ich. So we set up our old 55 gal and the naso is in there. The long nosed hawk, dragon wrasse, and 3 threadfin cards are in a 10 gal. We have tanks everywhere!

I am doing hyposalinity tx on all. It took 2 days to lower the salinity to 1.009 and we plan to leave the fish in that for 6 weeks. The 240 will "lay fallow" as they say, for the same time period. This sucks.


Anthony, now I know how you felt last year at IMAC--we will feel much the same, as we will not likely be bringing any livestock home--I think we would have to start the quarantine all over again if we introduced any rock or anything that could carry ich on it.

We have been lucky all these years, I guess, never having to deal with ich--I am learing alot . I started out with a copper tx in the 29 with the sailfin and foxface. The copper is still at treatment level even tho I've done water changes--so it will take while for it to come down. If hypo works, I think I will prefer it to copper.

So far so good, except for the fact that we lost two of our favorite fish. Ha, I guess they are all our favorites. At least we still have the naso and the dragon wrasse. Others in Q are longnose hawk, 3 threadfin cardinals, sailfin tang and foxface. I miss my tuskfish the most. He was like a puppy dog. So sweet. What a loss. We will just have to carry on and work to save the rest. Everyone seems to be thriving--i feel that most would have died if not removed from the 240. The hawk, threadfins and dragon still have shown no symptoms and I have them in 1.025 but the rest are in hypo at 1.009. Thank heaven for refractometers. As for symptoms improving, the naso looks the same (light white dusting on stomach), the foxface's spots cleared up completely, and the sailfin has bare spots all over that used to be ich-covered--I've read that these will heal. I will probably end up putting the 10g in hypo too, but I will wait a few days to give the fish a chance to get used to being moved. These are the ones that have shown no symptoms, but are prob. carrying the parasites. I know they must be treated.
