bumpy skin

I have a hippo tank for over 5 years. His color is not the best and his skin is bumpy. He is active and eats. He shows no signs of illness other than the way he looks. I treated my tank with melafix and lost 1/2 my fish in the process. No other fish in the tank has this problem. Any ideas or suggestions.

The skin has not eroded. He is just pale and the small lumps are throughout his body. They are not big but his entire body if bumpy. He shows no other signs of any problem.

you lost 1/2 fish due to treating with melafix or was it due to some disease?

getting a pic posted will definitely help.. i've seen some hippos that when they have ich will show very bumpy skin.

I know melafix says you can safely treat the tank but I'd be cautious. I use melafix but I have never dosed the tank. I ONLY use it as a dip.

There are turbellarian worms that may cause bumps. One of those causes black ich, which is quite common with tangs, especially those that come from Hawaii.

What were your last additions to the tank (fish, inverts or corals) before you noticed the bumps for the first time?

I've had this fish for 5 years. He is 6" long. He has been like this for 4 years. No other fish in the tank (1000 gallons) are affected. I have added fish throughout the years and they are OK.

A picture would help.

If this is a chronic condition that is going on for years it is unlikely to be one of the usual suspects.
Though there are parasites with complicated lifecycles and intermediary hosts that just go into a holding pattern until that host is eaten by the final host.
