butterflies in reefs

I generally feed the 1mm NLS pellets. I also try offering the very small Hikari pellets and the BZA food, which has sizes ranging from almost a powder up to small granules (that are smaller than the NLS 1 mm pellets). The yln cruises right up to them and to NLS flakes, checks them out, and then turns away without eating them. It does like live blackworms, though.

Conversely, the falcula will eat the pellets (mostly off the bottom, but a few from the water column) and flakes but isn't at all interested in the blackworms. My ulietensis and saddleback (now in the DT) aren't interested in blackworms either but love the pellets.

You guys should post pics of them in your tanks.

Here is a short video of mine. Still actively searching the entire sand bed for food to eat, ignoring the mysis and brine and flake and pellets and clam floating by:lol2:

He is a very calm fish so far, the video was in the middle of a water change, all the other fish hide and he was just out cruising around. He has shown interest in trying to eat my dwarf cerith snails, picked up a couple today:eek:

It partially explains why nature makes so many of each species when you see that they aren't adaptive enough to take the easy meal floating by them. I realize a bunch of food floating by isn't natural, but you would think that they would catch on quickly given that it is eat more energy than you burn or die.

Thanks for starting this thread, it is a great read! I absolutely love butterfly fish and though I currently only house a Chelmon rostratus in my 130 gallon Lagoon reef, I've certainly been contemplating adding at least one other butterfly. It's great to read about the needs some of the different species here and all of your experiences!

Anyone have experience with Microcanthus strigatus (Stripey Butterfly)? Reef safe, 50/50 or not safe at all?

Read a recent article in a fish magazine saying they eat aptasia anemones. It was from a well known person in the hobby, I'll have to get the article and see what the author and details again.

hi everyone! just want to get anyone experience with burgessi bf... i got mine yesterday only. and planning to introduce it to a mix reef environment... just want to know if there is any success story regarding this fish in a reef environment... i have sps, lps and zoas on my display tank... my tank is lit by 3 250 watts mh...

thanks again everyone... btw all this success stories in this thread make me want to buy more bf... thanks again.

Few shots of my fremblii butterflyfish. And as with all my other butterflyfishes, they completely leave my coral alone.

for those who have no idea what my tank looks like, i've added a video i think one or 2 pages back. you can see that my tank is really packed full of coral.

i feed my butterflies TONS but each time, a little. many small feedings a day. if you keep them really gorged with food and full all the time and well fed, you will see that they don't even bother hunting for food in the rocks. much less eat your coral.

i've always liked the longnose butterflyfish.
It's one of those iconic fishes that everyone sees in books and documentaries. i always remember when i was much younger (well i'm not that old, i'm only 19) and i wanted to keep this fish ever since i saw it in TV and books. now that i have my own tank, it's great to know that this iconic symbol is so cheap and readily available haha.

so docile and easy. i like their square shaped appearance but when the dorsal spines are erected, WOO HOO! they look gorgeous!

sorry for the blurry photos :(
