butterflies in reefs

Brett, I do not have that lecture on tape... my recent TOTM article touches on it... does your local club bring in speakers? If so I'd love to come out to Arizona... I was last there as a kid when my best friend moved from Jersey to Tuscon... my father flew with me to Denver and got me on the plane to Tuscon where I met my friend... I remember I bought a rubber band wooden gun at Tombstone that then got confiscated by the TSA on my way back!:sad1::D I've spoken in over 20 states now... but not Arizona... and this time I'll check my rubber band gun!:fun4:

That would be really cool but unfortunately the club scene is kinda weak here. I'll have to read over your tank of the month thread again. If you ever make it back to Tucson let me know maybe we can chat. Ill buy you a new rubberband gun:thumbsup: Thanks John.

My Prognathodes guyanensis... from the depths of the Atlantic... :)

Drool!

Frank, it sounds like you may have to remove the ulietensis, or the corals... or wait and see if your corals adapt to the picking... soft corals can survive a while without opening...

Thanks, John, I was afraid of that. The ulietensis is a good fish so I hate to give it up as I have other butterflies and it would be my luck to remove the ulietensis only to find another butterfly goes after the coral.

Are there other corals that I could put in that are less likely to be picked on?

I am going to try putting the corals in a container or basket in the tank to see if they open back up while being protected.

Well, updates:

1. So as you all read, the saddleback is out. But he's doing great in QT, and once he's clean, he'll be back in my FOWLR.

2. I moved the larger YLN BF to the reef a couple months ago, because he was looking a bit beaten up in the FOWLR. I never saw any direct aggression from any other fish, but his fins would look a bit ragged, while all the other fish, including other butterflies, looked perfect, so I decided to move him. He's doing great in the reef, and the smaller LYN had no issue with him being added. I'm starting to think that a small amount of fin flaring during feeding doesn't necessarily mean two butterflies aren't a pair. I've seen butterflies truly fight, and it is UGLY!

3. I sold the zoster last night, he was eating my gorgonian polyps too much...they were never open any more, and gorgonians just aren't a coral I'm willing to do without.

Yellow longnose, IMO, is one of your best bets. Mine get so many compliments too... they just look so "coral reefy" :D

This guy is arriving Friday morning ^_^d

He'll be one of the first fish in my new 100 Gallon Cube. Downgrading from the system in my signature. For now his tank mate will be a pair of clowns and a yellow watchman goby.
