butterflies in reefs

My new baby is out of QT now and doing well. Im thinking about a Declivis next, what do you guys think?

Thanks Peter, he took a beating from my yellow tank to the point that I gave my tang to a fellow reefer but is doing really well now. I guess sometimes it just doesn't work out though. Did you get that kite that was on DD?

I've never been a fan of the Muelleri, until I saw Brett's specimen just now.
That is a great specimen you have there bud.
When I had my 180 I had the same trouble with my Yellow Tang and a Copperband. I'm going completely Tangless with the new tank so I don't have to deal with much aggression problems.

I'd definitely recommend a Declivis for you as well. Best place to get them is PIA IMO, I believe they have a pair up right now for sale. Price wise they are typically the best, and the quality of the packaging and the fish itself rivals Diver's Den IMO.
The adapt pretty quickly to tank life. Mine will eat anything I feed the tank. The only "corals/anemones" it messes with are aiptasia. He has also shown no aggression yet towards the small Capistratus I have, even during feeding time.

No, I didn't... I wasn't home when it went up. I wonder who bought it though.... it looked pretty skinny in the picture.

Hi everyone!
You guys and gals are an infectious bunch!
I recently had a bad ich outbreak from a ROCK, really, not kidding! Lost many of my fishie friends and was really sad but started reading this thread and I'm getting my motivation back and wanting to try something different!
Question:
Current tank is 72x24x30 with Emperor Angel, Powder Blue Tang, Pair of clowns, and a sleeper banded goby. This is a mixed reef tank.
Wanting possibly a long nose plus a copper banded butterfly.
Plan is to do a four week low salinity quarantine in a 20 gallon long and end with prazi.
I treat ich with hypo at 1.008, do I quarantine at 1.008?
Would these two fish work well with my current inhabitants?
I'm also planning on getting some wrasses...the leopard type

The powder blue tang might give you trouble. Mine didn't play well with a copperband when I had my 180. I've never had large angels, so I don't have any info on that.
You could try it. But make sure to socially acclimate prior to releasing the fish into the tank. You will get an idea how you're other fish will react to the new inhabitant, while keeping all of your fish out of harms way.

My PBT has always been really nice. The only fish he sword play with was my Atlantic Blue Tang who was growing to be his equal in size and then besting him. I will get one of those fish acclimating/trap things and use it to acclimate the butterfly.
I was hoping that I could get one of those smaller butterflies like Chaetodon punctatofasciatus, Chaetodon rafflesi, Chaetodon xanthurus because I don't want anotehr fish that can get more than six inches. But it seems that they are more unpredictable at times.

I've always loved butterfly fish, racoon butterfly fish that I caught in tide pools as a kid are what got me into keeping aquariums. Love this thread. Anyways, I seen these in a local pet store listed as "Yellow Nosed Butterfly fish" and was wondering what the scientific name for it was and if anyone knew anything about them? Sorry its a bad picture, I only had a junk cell phone camera.

Looks like Chaetodon flavirostris, and wetwebmedia has them listed under the "Poor Choices" section of B/F's and say they are shy and poor feeders. If the fish are eating it might be worth a try otherwise I'd pass.

Definitely I fish I'm interested in trying in a FO tank. I wouldn't put one in a reef.

Well I have a list of Butterflies that I would be interested in keeping in groups or pairs and several different species of BF. Let me know what you think of each as in compatability with other BF's and what yalls experience is with them in a mixed reef and also in a FOWLR.
