Same fish, just each side. Obviously it's a pelewensis or punctatofasciatus....

Or both??

Peter,

I'd venture to say C. pelewensis x C. punctatofasciatus. Do you know where this fish was brought in from? The two species have overlapping territories in the Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands "area" and into Australia.

Notice the specimen in the background of this picture. (NE Australia)

From the looks I'd lean toward pelewensis, but really, the only thing that matters is how it's eating. If it's attacking any food in sight it's got a lot of puncto in it.

LOL, my thoughts exactly! However, in all fairness, I saw a pair of pelew from QM at RAP last year, and they both ate :eek1:

They had two at the LFS. Both ate frozen mysis. In QT, he's currently eating minced scallop very well, and some PE mysis.

I could ask the LFS, to see if their invoice says origin.

Well thank goodness I QT butterflies for so long.

I noticed both butterflies in QT acting very strange. VERY twitchy. This had been going on for a few days now. It got to a point that I thought the one dotdash was going to have a heart attack, the way it was twitching and dashing around the tank. I couldn't see any spots of any sort, but I did notice some cloudiness to some parts of the fins, and a couple tears here and there. So I FW dipped them. Yup, you got it. FLUKES! Took 6 weeks to show up!! I left them in the FW for 10 full minutes. They were much better after that. I added the prazi last night.

Darn butterflies are so much trouble, I tell you!! But I love 'em :D

angels are so much worse. i promise!

I've dealt with both. I promise you they can both suck

But I definitely find butterflies way more problematic, especially next to your average pomacanthus, holacanthus, or centropyge...

It's a hybrid, they are well known to hybridize in several areas in the west Pacific... In some areas (like the Solomons I think), hybrids are more common than either parent species.

Update on this guy. He is eating flake and pellet well. Lovely little fish!

yes definitely hybrid.

i've even seen specimens with full punctatofasciatus on one side, and full pelewensis on the other. fantastic!

anyway i agree butterflies are more problematic than angels. white spots are almost always a guarantee during QT, flukes, refusal to eat, bla bla bla
