Buying a RO/DI unit --- Which one?

Ok I just came into some money (credit card increased my limit $700 more!! WOOT) and its about time I finished up getting some things I need. I am buying a pump and an RO/DI unit.

I am completely clueless on what to buy or how they work or anything about them. I have been hesitant to buy one because I dont think it will hook up to any of my water sources. I think all my nozzles on my sinks wont work. Is this going to be a problem?

Which RO/DI unit should I buy? I have a 90g so it doesnt need to be producing 100gpd. Im sure I could get by with something under 25gpd.

Price is always in my mind, so keep it in yours when suggesting things. :D

You can get a 75GPD 5-stage system on ebay for well under $100. New, with new membranes and cartridges, every conceivable hookup option included.

You don't want a 25GPD unit and even if you got one you wouldn't be saving much, if anything, over what you can get on ebay.

As for which one, as a wise man once said, "Zero TDS is zero TDS."

Ive heard some *ify* things about ebay units, thats why I am a bit hesitant to buy one of those as opposed to a name brand one from a store. *shrug*

I have one of the 100 gpd units from ebay. It has performed sufficiently. However I was still not happy with the tds. It was bringing it from 463 to 24 or so. Contacted Randallb and he hooked me up with a 20" DI cartridge that I just installed this weekend. After I do my next water change I will see where I am now.

*ugh*

I hate buying new equipment, its so frustrating. I dont want to buy something, then have to buy something else to make it work. Not saying that a name brand will work any better, just voicing my frustrations.

jimmy how much did you spend on your ebay unit and the new catrige? And was the origonal ebay unit a RO/DI or just a RO?

Search ebay on h20guru or theh2oguru or something like that.

One thing: I may replace my 100GPD membrane with a 75GPD, which is supposed to be a bit more efficient.

Jimmy, something is wrong there if you are getting 24TDS with new membrane/cartridges... Make sure the cartridges are seated properly -- once my carbon wasn't in right and I got whacky numbers.

It was sold as RO/DI. But after talking to Randallb, it was RO w/o DI.

Not really considering that I was unaware until recently that it did not have a DI cartridge.

Going to go search now.

Jimmy I am in the same boat as you on getting my TDS down. I am lucky if I hit 15-20tds Crappy water we have

Lots of ebay sellers do that. Annoying as all heck. But at least all of his BiN auctions are the same price. The others are just different starting prices. He's probabl y trying to figure out how to set the starting bid to get himself the highest selling price.

Jimmy sorry didn't understand that initially you had no DI.

Hello
I have just finished rebuilding my RO/DI with all parts ala RandalB.
After the initiall membrane flush this is what I got.
TDS out of the tap has been around 175 the couple of weeks.
I was able to fill up a 18 gallon tank in under 3 hours with only 40 gallons or so going down the drain.
1 - Filmtec 75 GPD membrane...$25.00
1 - 5 micron filter.........................$4.00
2 - 5 micron carbon filters..........$20.00
2 - 10" DI refills..........................$16.00
$65.00 and 0 TDS priceless!
Mind you my system is super charged with one of his booster pumps kits, psi is over 140.

Stay away from Ebay..

Talk to Walter at Airwaterice.com or look at Spectra Pure. Coralife and the Ebay cheapies will wind up costing lots more over time...

I know of what I speak...

Ebay seller theh20guru IS Air, Water and Ice. Same people. Same units. Prices lower on ebay than on the company website.
