Hi,stuart again, I would like to know everybody's thouhts on getting livestock from internet sights. I know you can save a lot of money, and probably able to get any species you want, when you want them. I don't even think i could get live rock without seeing it first, to be able to build the landscape that would go well in my 24g pod. Yours truly( Dazed & confused ) STUART. P.S. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY

you might be able to get the livestock cheaper, but you will be paying around $30 for shipping. ask around on here or local reefers and see if you can find a Quality local fish store. that's what i'm trying to do.

I have had good luck with liveaquaria.com and have no hesitation in dealing with them, but the shipping is pricey.

There is, however, a great virtue in getting a fish from a local store, one that has been in a local tank for a good length of time, not fresh-in from shipping. The chance that such a long-held fish will come down with disease is minimal, compared with a fish that may have been through 3 no-food in-the-dark shippings in succession.

If you have a local Reef Club you may be able to get together with one or two (or more) members and make a combined order. It will save signifigantly on shipping. I've purchased from saltwaterfish.com with success. Other club members say that liveaquaria.com and even marinedepot.com also provide quality livestock. Unfortunately there isn't a quality LFS within 50 miles of here and to travel much further is almost as expensive as shipping. More if you make a group purchase.

I will inform Dave at Aquaria of what you said. If I were you I would expect to pay double from now on. LOL.

I've had very good luck with internet orders. I've also called them and talked to the shippers (often the owner) and gotten things described to me that have helped me decide. LFs's around here are pretty spotty to say the least and sell their livestock quickly, so they aren't even acclimated to their system before they go into yours. Face it, the lfs orders off the internet too.
Only downside is to get a reasonable deal, you have to order more than you would with an impulse purchase at the lfs.

Only problem with internet is sometimes you don't get what you expect and sometimes you get more then you expect. I've done it several times and it goes boths ways.

As long as its a reputable place you'll be fine. Unless you have really high expectations.

local LR= 10$ per pound, its almost barren and still needs curing
or
online LR=5$ per pound for fully cured rocks covered in life

even buying one or two pounds you still save money then buying it from my LFS, so i guess it really depends on what you got localy. plus they have a very poor selection of corals and live stock :( always the same frags from the owners and employee tanks.

Mike, if you've been to any of the supposed pet stores in Ft. Walton Beach I think you'd understand. Haven't been to P'Cola or Mobile so I can't say about there. Fish Biz used to be OK until Larry sold out. It's been downhill from there. Also can't speak for stores in Stuart's area. If he was satisfied, I assume he'd shop there. Chow!

Sorry you took it the wrong way. I thought you had been going there and knowing him and me it would have been humorous. My mistake. Again, sorry.

If you order anything online, just remember how important it is to quarantine the fish for a month, if everything seems fine and there are no signs of disease... then you should introduce them to the display tank. Its not fun, and hard to do beacause of impatience... but, ive found out that it eventually leads to the best results, in terms of healthier livestock in the long run.
