Bye bye MP40, hello Tunze

I pulled the trigger and bought two tunze 6095's. I may add a controller later. Not a rush now that the units come with their own limited controller. They will be the sole water movers in my 125(72x18x22) tank. The tank is mainly softies, a few LPS, and some monti caps.

My 2 MP40's are gen 2's and have been in service about 7-8 years each. I have replaced the wet sides as well. About 2 years ago one of them would shut down at slower speeds, no error message, just shut off. Keeping the speed up stopped this, however, reef crest mode was out of the question. Lagoon mode it was. Recently the other one does the same. Now both are in lagoon mode. During that time I also ran an early model Tunze stream along with them. The Tunze ran for about ten years with one impeller change during that time. A few moths ago the motor seized up and was removed.

The reliability, cost, direction ability, and ease of maintenance is why I am going Tunze for replacements. I was going to get a MP40QD($350), but opted for 2 Tunze 6095($320).

I will say I am a bit disappointed in the vortechs. I think they should have lasted longer without issues(and one of the originals was broken out of the box). My Tunze lasted ten years, and would have lasted longer had I kept up with maintenance.

I know that the MP40QD moves more water than the old ones and will move a little more that the two tunzes, but the ability to control the two pumps individually and to be able to aim them are huge pluses. That and I can add more if necessary in the future.

Wish me luck.

I just made this change on my Red Sea Reefer last Friday. I had 2 Mp40s on a 4 foot tank, because I had 2 islands for my aquascape I couldn't get flow in the back, I just added 2 Tunze 6095 connected to my Apex running an awesome profile created by slief and I love it.

I love how I can aim them, they are more silent than my MP40QD and more flexible.

They really are great pumps. I was and ecotech user for years. And was pretty happy. I just wish that they had addressed the noise issue on their flagship products sooner. Also, I found that every year I was send one of my pumps in for something. The customer service was amazing but I feel like the reliability wasnt there so made the switch to tunze when I set up my new tank. Don't get me wrong. I love the MP pumps for so many reasons but I just had continued issues with mine.

Welcome to the Tunze club.

Thanks. I really do love them. I can run them higher aimed at the top without creating a sandstorm and to be honest I think the overall footprint is smaller. Even though the MP40 has only the impeller portion on the inside, it's big and the dry side is big. The 6095 are not noticeable on the back wall of my tank.
