I didn't want to post in your Bylaws thread but as a business owner I have a question about one of the bylaws.

"- Any person/hobbiest who owns a local fish/pet store and sponsors the society with a SCMAS flyer displayed in the store and discounts to public members of SCMAS that shall be determined by the Board."

Am I reading this correctly? If a LFS wants to sponsor the club they will be told by the board what type or how much a discount they must give?

And if they don't agree to that discount what then you won't except their sponsorship?

Yes you are reading this correctly.

For example if one store is offering a 10% discount,
it would be unfair to accept another sponsor at a 5%
discount.

Ok thats all I wanted to know.

I am curious though who that would be unfair to? Seems the store with the lower discount would be at a disadvantage.

And a benifit to the club members as they would get some kind of discount no matter where they shop.

BTW I think 10% sounds very reasonable if that is what your asking for. Should help you get more sponsors.

Part of having sponsors is encouraging people to shop in those stores, if every store in town was a sponsor I don't think it would
worth it for any of the stores. Every store was offered a chance to become a sponsor, some accepted and some declined based on how they felt it fit their business model. I do know that our sponsors have put a lot of work into improving their stores
based on SCMAS members recommendations. Thus improving their market share. IMHO Colorado Springs is oversaturated with fish stores now based on it's population.

Is the goal to get members to shop only at the sponsors' stores?
So, it seems. If all the members shopped at the same store, the store would make lots of money and the members would get better prices than at the other stores that don't offer the discount. Common economics.

This is from the new bylaws and should answer your question.

"These sponsors shall be given preference by the SCMAS"

I'm not going to jump in with anything useless here, I don't want to stir up the pot with a LOL or any useless jab at anyone.
I Plan to be involved in the new board and want to give you guys my point of view with the whole LFS sponsor thing.
If you don't like it don't vote for me and I will simply be a regular club member which is a lot less work and frankly perfectly fine for me.

I never use my LFS discount card at any CS stores or Denver stores. Not that I don't appreciate them but I do shop at the sponsors stores I just don't ask for the SCMAS discount at checkout.

I don't feel the need to support a store SOLELY based on the fact they are a sponsor. I shop at places based on the fish and corals & dry goods they sell. Price is a factor but livestock rarity plays into it highly for me.

I stick with two-three stores locally, I have tried to give the others a chance but they never have anything, dimly lit coral tanks and the same old stuff week after week.

I give Scott a lot of press here that's because he gets what I want and gives me a heck of a deal. I am not hearing anyone else say that about their favorite stores. I sometimes feel bad that you other stores aren't getting that kind of press here, but maybe you need to slap your "loyal" customers around and get them to help you out! I want others to be able to see the quality corals he gets, therefore I post.
If your customers cared about you they would do the same, obviously they don't want to take the time to show off your store.

That said I feel a little bit of jealousy from you and you need to either improve and adapt or go away that's business! You need to evolve and market the heck out of your business to stay alive that's how it is. Keith, have you asked to become a sponsor lately? If so we're you turned down? I would not be doing this here if I was a LFS owner, I'd be PMing the right people behind the scenes.
But I figured since you brought it public I'd publicly respond with my view on it.

I cannot imagine a LFS wanting to become a sponsor and being turned away right now. If that is happening then it's an issue I will personally do everything I can to change when I am on the board and can change. I don't see anything in the bylaws that says we limit the amount of stores that get involved.

The line "This is from the new bylaws and should answer your question."

"These sponsors shall be given preference by the SCMAS"

Why not? don't you see that everywhere in life? You go to a baseball game, you see a big sign advertising Verizon wireless, don't you think the players will want to support those that support them? I hear radio stations plug the heck out of business' that support their contests and whatnot, why shouldn't we? give me a good reason.

Sincerely,
Chris Bueschel

But the bylaws state otherwise. Right?

I stick with two-three stores locally, I have tried to give the others a chance but they never have anything, dimly lit coral tanks and the same old stuff week after week.

This would be direct violation of RC rules

That said I feel a little bit of jealousy from you and you need to either improve and adapt or go away that's business!

Wow I asked for clarification and now I am jealous, interesting twist.

You need to evolve and market the heck out of your business to stay alive that's how it is.

Keith, have you asked to become a sponsor lately? If so we're you turned down? I would not be doing this here if I was a LFS owner, I'd be PMing the right people behind the scenes.

Tried that once but had my words twisted and made public, so I decided to ask here so that could not be done again. The "real" reason we decided not to sponsor SCMAS. Had nothing to do with our business model.

I also thought before I "asked" I would want clarification on what is expected before I agreed to anything.

But I figured since you brought it public I'd publicly respond with my view on it.

Exactlly he asked a question I didn't see it answered so I quoted your new bylaws. Why is that a problem?

Actually all this is pointless I wanted some clarification on the commercial part of the bylaws I got that what more needs to be said.

ok Keith well have yourself a good one then! Good luck with the store and your advertising program. I am not a board memeber, I can't help you with your questions and my insight is obviously not what you want to hear.
Regards,
Chris

Insight would be fine personal attacks I can live with out. Invitations to violate RC rules so I can be banned nice try.

If you can't help with the question why reply at all? Your post was about as needed as Crit21. Didn't help with the question and made accusations that you have no basis to make.

I have not violated any RC rules at all. Try it bud, try it!

Don't be so jealous that I like Exotic Tropical's on Wood Ave So much, the fact that they have all the best stuff around makes it my choice for a good LFS in Colorado Springs. I mean I tried to patronize your store, in fact I've tried to patronize that place on and off for 15 years and I just cannot ever find anything worthy of sticking in my tank. Sorry

Now comparing my posts with Crits is hitting below the belt.

Inviting you to be banned? You lost me there

I love breaking rules, I hate the rules of life sometimes.
It is ok to challenge stuff once in a while in life. Afterall that's why lawyers were invented ;)

oh and personal attacks? I combed through my last post, the only thing I can remotely think of is where I said "good luck with the store" Honestly thats not a personal attack, it's more of a " I don't think you'll make it, I hope you'll try harder"
That's my recommendation, advertise your store wisely, here and in public (the other public ;) )
