CAD 50G Artisan Rimless Starphire Cube Build

Put carbon in later. When you cycle you just want to let your tank get dirty so the bacteria can grow. But what are you trying to absorb with the carbon? Carbon can also absorb good chemicals. Some people run it all the time but I think it's better only to use it when you are trying to absorb something specifically.

Wont the shrimp cause any weird smells?
Just thought it might clean up the water a bit.

How long should I leave the shrimp in the tank?

Well the point of putting the shrimp in the tank is to make the water dirty or more specifically to break down into ammonia which will be food for the first bacteria. If you just put one shrimp in and have good flow I don't think you should smell anything. What pump are you using for circulation in the display? And you can just leave the shrimp in the tank until it completely dissolves.

Im using my friends Koralia 1050gph powerhead for now till i get my vortechs. I see no dead spots at all.
How long does it usually take till the shrimp dissolves?

I dunno. It depends... but if it really bothers you that much you can use flake food or any other kind of marine food. What really matters is that you get a good population of bacteria going. When you are done cycling you should have zero ammonia, zero nitrites and high nitrates.

Also I remember now why I didn't like the idea of feeding your chiller with the return pump. If you feed your chiller with the return pump and you put the output of the chiller into your sump you are creating a closed loop which will cause your chiller to turn off and on and not work properly. This is because it will chill the water from the return and then put it right back in the sump so the water in the sump will get colder and the temp regulator will sense it and turn it off even though the display tank is still too warm. The only way to bypass this is to use an external temperature controller and place the temp probe in the sump upstream of the output of the chiller.

I run my chiller independent of my reefkeeper lite because it acts as a redundancy in case the temp probe fails and the heater stays on.

No it doesnt bother me. I was just curious.

My chiller's output is not going back into the sump. It's going from the return pump, to the chiller, back to my return plumbing, and straight into my display. The last thing I want to do is to have a closed loop setup going back into my sump.
I won't be getting my chiller anytime soon. Maybe in about 3-4 months.

Oh ok cool. Post a picture of the plumbing when you do that. I always like to see neat plumbing. Oh yeah and do you think you'll be able to make it to our next SFVR meeting?

^For sure bro.

Ya I should be able to make it.
I really want to come. I would like to meet local reefers and get some tips and help and all that good stuff :D

Looking great so far, I will be watching because I am looking to get a new tank soon and the 50G CADLight is on the list.

Sounds good man : )

Hey guys, my water keeps foaming up when it drains. Im scared the foam will overflow., which it almost did not too long ago. What is this caused from? Is there a way to stop it or do I just wait it out?
My tank is also still a little cloudy but not that bad.
I really need some help.

ive got the same tank and need to set up a thread. i wish i would have taken all the pictures before i set up my tank. its about 3 months old.

What do you think of trying to set up an artisan cube club?

Nice lol

Im down to start a artisan club.

Thanks for your help richard. My friend is going to let me borrow his AquaC nano remora for a little while. I need to get my skimmer soon. I'm going to ask my mom for loan haha

UPDATE!
I was having some camera troubles this morning, so I'm borrowing my friends SLR.

I was having some problems last night with bubbles being produced by my drain. But so far it's under control thanks to Richard (cocoaandme).
My tank is still a little cloudy but thats due to some dead sponge or something that was on one of my BRS rock. I took it out for now till I get my protien skimmer.

I added a few more rocks (live rock) to my aquascape. I hope you guys like it.

I'm going to buy about 10lbs of live rock to put in my main display. I got a few ideas I want to do. That will be in my next update.

I also made a new overflow cover out black acrylic. I like it soooo much better.
I'm getting better at this acrylic stuff :D

Here's a few pictures.

^Thanks buddy

My tank has cleared up alot today after adding the carbon.
I am borrowing my friends skimmer for the time being. The skimmer started skimming once I turned it on. I turned the flow down on my return and doing a wet skim right now. Let it throughly skim because this skimmer is meant for 25 gallons lol

Hopefully I get my skimmer soon.

I'll most likely one up my skimmer.
