CADlights 39g Pro build thread

Hi Chris - Welcome aboard! Save your nickels and buy the biggest tank you can (i.e. the Artisan) It will extend (just slightly) the time until you feel the need to go even bigger ;)

Thanks, Tom. You're right on the Artisan recommendation but I think it will be a tough sell here. I'm certainly going to try though.

So today I took out the foam blocks from my overflow and put in the baggies. I had to use 2 of them because there was so much noise from the cascading water behind the returns. I didnt check the distance, but is there any chance these bags can reach the opening of the durso and clog it up?

Do you have water entering the overflow from all three sides of the overflow????? My Cadlights tank only has water entering from the front panel so I only have the ziplock attached to the front panel. I dont think you have anything to worry about the bags clogging up the durso. Do you have the strainer cap on it? I would think about using a thinner ziplock bag so its not as noticeable when looking at the tank.

Yeah it comes in on all 3 sides, and it cascades a lot especially on one of the sides. The bags arent really noticeable when looking at it. I also didnt get a strainer cap with my kit. Was I supposed to?

Hmmm that's interesting that it comes in on three sides. Mine only comes in on the front. I'm to curious to hear from others that have the tank. Here's a picture of mine. You'll notice my durso stands higher than yours. I did that to minimize the amount of water fall noise.

You should have gotten a strainer cap and I would get one from the lfs if you can. It will prevent snail, crabs and small fish from ending up in your sump.

Yeah I thought it was kind of strange when I didnt see a cap, but didnt think much of it. As far as water coming into the overflow shouldnt it come in on all sides because all of the holes should be at the same level?

Aaah - There's the answer. The overflow on our 39GPros are single-sided (only open on the front.) This made it easy to control the waterfall with the Zip-Lock.
With 3 sides, it will be trickier. I think I'd consider raising the Durso height.

You might also want to evaluate your flow through the sump - Assuming you've got plenty of movement in the tank from powerheads, slowing the return will quiet the overflow. Many argue that any flow rate greater than your skimmer rate is a waste and may reduce the effectiveness of other functions in your sump (i.e. refugium, passive carbon or GFO...)

I'm curious about why they would send him a tank with the overflow box that way. I put a ball valve on my return line to slow the flow down and it works great. I had to replace the stock pump because it burned out after 3 weeks and I went with a mag 9. I knew it was too big but I was planning for the future when I upgrade to a bigger tank.

I want to put a flat cap on my durso pipe so you don't see it sticking out above the overflow box.

Thats the new cad design! Came out this year. All three sides have teeth and the bottom center of the overflow box is also an intake. Also, the inside of the overflow has been re-inforced with glass as well.

A few pics of the tank with the lumenmax 3 fixture.

Welcome to the club!

Im thinking about getting a dual media reactor from BRS, but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to fit it in the stand somewhere. Im really trying to stay away from keeping anything outside of the stand that isnt my AC Jr lol

I think someone else here hung their BRS reactors above the sump on the wall of the stand, without the shelf in there of course. Not much room to do anything extra in the stand when the shelf is still in there.
