Cadlights 50G Artisan Cube Tank Build Thread

Im in the process of adding up my money to pull the trigger on the 50g Cadlights artison tank, I really dont have more space for larger, I have a JBJ 28g PRO LED and am happy with the "size", what I CANT stand is the all in one, and since I want to go with a Ecotech light upgrade, the artison just cant be beat. I know going from a AIO to a sump system just makes me so much more happier, that the possibilities are so much better, but I realize that I better think it out, because although much more space than a AIO, not thinking out the sump will put me in the same place I am now with the AIO, not having room/possibility to add what I want.

I need to ask you (or anyone else on the thread with these tanks), what is the evaporation rate on these rimless. I plan on using ecotech LED, but I live in San Diego (20 mi inland) where summers can hit as much as 100 degrees (although 85-92 are normal and 100 is the exception).

I already have a chiller, although probably slightly too small 1/15 (but the tank is also in the main living area, where a localized air conditioner is and would be used to drop the ambient to no more than 75degrees). Anyways, really wasn't meaning to get into a chiller sizing conversation, but more back to the ATO. I already have the Tunze Osmolator on the jbj28, and I loose about 1/2 (or a little more) gallon a day during winter, Im expecting this to be worse. I dont have the sump yet to see how easy it will be to design a sump cover (but can someone tell me if this will help alot?). The other ATO question, is where are you guys putting the storage tank?. I plan on running a phosban reactor, but will put it into the sump if I need too rather than hang it on the lip of the sump. With the sump pushed back against the rear of the stand, how much depth is there to put in a ATO storage tank?

I used to etch printed circuit boards, and if you think of a computer motherboard (thin, yet long and tall) it would be the perfect storage tank, I can actually find 18"x2"x18 (3 gal) and 18x4x18 (6 gal), Im sure that the 4" depth is there, and the 18" wide is there, just not sure if 18" tall is without hitting the shelf.

Thanks in advance.

^ you get about 5" of extra space I use the space for carbon/gfo reactors but it would probably work for your idea

thanks, can you let me know my height and width restraints as well, I wont be getting the setup for a few weeks still.

p.s., what is your evaporation rate this winter (didnt catch where you were in he US before replying) <- ahh, Orange County, well, if your near Santa Ana very eastern Tustin, or more inland, your about 5 degree's cooler, so your numbers would be interesting to me.

Thanks

Wow! Awesome build! I will be taking a lot of your suggestions and tips for mine!

Do you have a picture of your overflow setup, with the updated drain?

I loose about 3 gallons a week with my artisan 50 to evaporation (I loose a little more in the winter than the summer). I no longer use a chiller at all since switching to AI LEDs, my tank never got above 80.5 degrees last summer. I live in central Orange County, perhaps not quite as ht as your location, but close. I do run a small computer fan in the sump compartment during the summer and we will run the AC when the house gets over 82 degrees. I made a custom sump/refugium with and extra chamber for top off water.

I was running GFO but I haven't changed the media in almost a yeah haha. But I have a large refugium.

And I lose about 3 gallons a week as well due to evaporation. Nice to see your tank is doing well thegrun. You may or may not recognize that my main refugium used to be your frag tank haha.

can anyone following this thread or the OP tell me who makes the 4" sock holder mount that the OP is using on his input into the sump (page 2 picture of sump), I've seen the RedSea version, but the OP's version looks a lot better and I cant seem to locate anything other than the RedSea (probably a bad search phrase).

Thanks

If I remember correctly it is a CPR filter sock holder. But I think they recently changed their design. If you look around online you can find the old style ones like mine. And I am the OP.

LOL! So I am assuming 10% weekly water change? What is your maintenance consist of?

Well actually my tank is at my family's house and I am currently studying in the UK. So maintenance is practically nothing. My dad has been feeding the fish, adding water to the ATO reservoir and sometimes I ask him to trim the refugiums or empty the protein skimmer.

hi !do you think a quiet one 4000 will be to much for this setup?can i dial it down with a ball valve?

You could use a 4000 and a gate valve. It would be better to use a gate valve instead of a ball valve for better flow adjustment and I would recommend using the bleeder setup like I have so that you don't put too much back pressure on the pump. Also it can be used to create more flow in your refugium.
