Calcium and alkalinity dosing

i was using the triton method when my 200 gallon deep deminsion started leaking. Just got my 18o gallon up and running as soon as it cycled will be sending in a water sample and resuming the triton method. I was going to do the AF method, but was recommended by someone to try triton. I could see improvements in my tank while dosing the triton products.

Nice read. Right now I am just using water changes since tank is young every week... still trying to figure out what I need to do in the future

Aerial How much is the Triton Method to run? i guess an approximent per gallon would be helpful. Don't forget Triton Method is speaking at the next meeting

Carlos, I may have to pick your brain now on the tropic marin balling system. I love using the AF pre-made system and it fits my system well, but I just upped my dosing to 265ml a day for all 3 parts...that's almost a $100 a month. I'm gonna have to start making my own (which AF has their 1,2,3 system parts for you to do) or CARX.

Sorry for the late reply Mike
I have only use the Tropic Marin, and they have that A,B,C, salts
they come with a measuring cup
but I got me a digital scale and it made it much faster to mix
I mix 20 liters at a time

A,B,C they come in a 1KG( 1000g) box
A = 380 g + 5 liters of RO water
B = 420 g + 5 liters of RO water
C = 120 g + 5 liters of RO water

they recommend 125 ml/day fot a 27 gallon tank
ca-400 to 450
alk- 6 to 9
mg/I Mg 1300
mg/I K 400 (not sure what this is lol )

Mike,

If my math is right and probably not. The Tropic Marin is a lot cheaper than Aqua Forest, but i would be interested in what it costs to mix your own AF. Hopefully a lot less than $50 a month

I'm doing the math now...with a few modifications that may work. Give me a min and I'll post my numbers

Sorry to get back to everyone so late, but I've been doing a lot of calcutions trying to tweak my own stronger version of the pre-made AF mixes. It's tricky when you are doing it yourself with the balling method and adjusting current recommendations cause of the mg additive can through off ionic balance (my/AF method adds mg with the calcium in the same container, unsure of how other brands add mg).

But with my heavy dosing regime 285+ml/day one month will cost me about $42 a month. As opposed to $100 a month with the pre-made mix.

Your math is correct, but the AF diy additives would go further if I didn't add my own twist to it. If i made stock solutions by their recommendations it would cost me about $35 a month.

I should really start using carx

Mike,

Thanks for the update and I agree it is pricy for both Aqua Forest Products. Im not sure Carlos has answered the question about the tropic marin balling mixes. I beleive one of his posts says the 3 boxes last 6 months and Big Al's has them for $29. that would be just under $5 a month. As I had mentioned Im using the BRS 3 part and adding Fauna Marin's 3 part balling light elements to the alk and Ca. It was $39 for the 3 little bottles and less if you buy the large ones. Im guessing that somewhere the $2-$3 a month cost for balling. THe AF and Im guessing the Tritron we will see a week from tomorrow is pricy as well

I was looking at the Fauna Marin Balling methods supplements that Carlos posted and 2 things kept me from going that route. 1) I was unsure the exact contents of each box, I like to know what is in each box and its quantities in case I need to make any adjustments. 2) I was skeptical on making whole changes to my dosing elements. I am certain that both products (AF/Fauna Marin) are top notch products with excellent purity control but I didn't want to change to a new product for fear of what such drastic changes might bring.

Also keep in mind that the amount one doses will determine how far/long it will last for them. The fauna marin boxes probably wont last me 6 months...but I cant say for certain as I never have tried them.

One thing I did notice recently is that now that I have upped my alk to 8.5 (I was shooting for 8.2-8.3) my corals are starting to show new growth faster.

Carlos is using Tropic Marin Balling mixes not Fauna Marin

Im not using Fauna Balling mixes Im using their Balling light trace elements 1,2,and 3 which I add 1 and 2 to calcium BRS and #3 to the alk component. The Fauna Marin Balling light Elements are different from the Fauna Marin Balling mixes which Im guessing already have the minor and major trace elements in them. i just followed the BRS youtube video's recommendation on how to turn their Alk and Ca mixes with the MAG into BRS's Balling method so to speak. I have only been doing it for about 10 days. So far so good, but I think it takes quite a bit longer to know how well it works.

Bye the way it sounds like the AF is a great product just pricy. I would guess as the balling methods beome more popular here the price will come down
