As pufferpunk stated, Ladies, "introduce yourselves"? It would be great to know how, why and when you got into this hobbie. Some info about your systems I think makes for great read and insight for others.
Great thread! I've been involved with zoanthids for about 5 yrs. Started out cause they were colorful and pretty easy. Still love them today. 120 mixed reef but the zoanthids still hold a special place in my heart.
I have a 44 gal corner pentagon tank with all zoas, I started with softies, in my 30 gal and then tried lps and sps, but zoas always caught my eye. So when I broke down the 30 gallon and set up the 44 gallon I decided to make it all zoas.
I am just getting into the hobby.. Tanks been up about 4 months... Zoanthids are by far my favorite corals!
I love all of the colors & textures, The ease of keeping them but not the price, LOL!
I really like all of the softies much more than the SPS...
Which I guess is a good thing, since I don't have the room, money, equipment or lighting for SPS!
I actually started a FOWLR many years ago in the mid 90's... Had to break that tank down and went with just African Chiclids for about 15 years... FINALLY got the courage and money up to start back into Salt water... WOW! So much has changed!
I Love this hobby!
My husband is starting to get into it with me as well......
I got into this hobby as a result of my bf. He was into reefing before we started going out; soon after we started going out, his tank crashed *cough cough.
A couple years ago, I decided we should start up a tank since his 55gal was just sitting there (after 3years!) with black nasty water and crud in it and I couldn't stand it. Plus I figured it'd give us a project to work on together and since he enjoyed it before, he can't complain about it I made the mistake of offering to half everything. haha, did not know that a set of lights alone cost me my student paycheck. x_x
But it's been almost 2 years since we started the tank and I think I love this hobby more than he does.
I only recently (like 6-9months ago) started getting hooked on zoas. Saw some colorful ones and have loved all ever since. When we first started though, I thought they were quite ugly and looked like a disease
I'm a fairly new reefer (just over a year). I have a bunch of different zoas. I like getting wild colonies, just to see how they turn out I've ended up with some nice looking morphs, but not necessarily the "designer" ones. The fanciest ones I have are some Dragon's Armour that I got as a three-polyp frag. It's now 25+ polyps, and really looking nice.
I've been in this amazing and addictive hobby for about 9 years now... current tank is a 240g., set up for 5 yrs. I have approx. 15 fish, lots of softies, 3 huge anemones, 2 of which split off of 1, (& 2 are going to be traded into my local LFS!) a couple of small stonys. But just recently got into zoas. I love them, and plan on getting some more, as soon as I can get a couple of the anemones out of there. They are beautiful but huge and I have to really watch and make sure they're not touching anything around them.
KellyPug, I know what you mean... years ago when "we" decided to get into this hobby, it was really my husband's idea and yep! it's MY hobby now! He likes it too of course, but I'm the Mama of these critters!
Different and fun thread, by the way....
i'd have to say by far zoos are my favorite. They've intrigued since i started the hobby about a year and a half ago. I can blame my boyfriend for that one. haha. he as well is wayy addicted with zoos. he's on the this forum all the time. haha.
I got into this hobby during the Nemo craze. My 2nd son was watching the movie at 3x a day, everyday. So I decided to let him have a real Nemo instead.
Now I have a 4x2.5x2 ft and a 4x1.5x1.5ft tanks, mainly filled with zoas, rics, open brains, cynarinas and scolys.
Glad to have all the ladies aboard. I'm sure there are many more out there. We would love to hear from you, and please weigh in with your knowledge, advice, experience and opinions, no need to be hy !!!
My wife is absolutely crazy about reefs. she does all the work and I ask all the questions. She knows more about my tanks than I do which is pretty sad.
She started off with a goldfish at the age of 7 and then had a nice 10gal freshwater aquarium with a spawning pair of angelfish. Her dad was big on SW and had a FO tank with a few anemones. She said things haven't changed much since the late 70's.
She loves her zoos and also the SPS, but zoos are really cool to her because of they mat. And when something goes wrong in the tank, it's the zoos that let her know not her SPS. She calls them her watchdogs.
